The Artful Clasp: June 2015 Weekend Intensive for Small Metals Artists and Jewelers

Antelman's award-winning work is shown in galleries on both coasts, where her refined clasps are statements of the well-crafted mechanism. Antelman's clasp-building clinic at the Center for Metal Arts is an opportunity to study with this west coast art jeweler and mentor here on the east coast. Metal arts students and professional jewelers will learn ways to build and refine the secure and well-designed mechanism in a weekend hands-on clinic.

Custom Clasps: Box and Key is a hands-on workshop for intermediate to advanced jewelers and small metals artisans. Antelman will demonstrate a variety of solutions to link the custom clasp to the rest of one's work, including how to customize terminals and findings. She will show techniques for designing the box and the key clasp mechanism as a unifying or even focal element for one's work. Students should expect to follow their own design inclinations in constructing their own clasps. Step-by-step handouts are supplied along with samples to play with. Basic fabrication, including soldering, required.

Alison Antelman's workshop is part of the Visiting Artists Program at the Center for Metal Arts, which brings practicing artisan instructors to the Hudson Valley for one-day or weekend workshops. The Small Metals Program at the Center for Metal Arts provides an on-going foundation workshop series of jewelry skills  Each project-based class offers tips, techniques and practice in the basic skills of the small metals shop. Two learning tracks offer beginner to advanced workshops in Blacksmithing and Small Metals, and the Visiting Artist Program brings workshops with professional working artists to the foundation curriculum.

The Center for Metal Arts is a community of metal artists, makers, and students exploring new skills or mastering advanced techniques in the metal arts. Established in 2003, the Center for Metal Arts attracts resident, regional and international instructors, and the staff includes award-winning blacksmiths and designers, studio techs and support staff.
