KOLKATA, India - May 13, 2015 - PRLog -- For the past couple of years, the Indian defense sector has been one of the largest spenders in its category. The Indian Government has been leaving no stones unturned to modernize the Indian army, navy and air force. The recent budget indicates that the mood has not changed as the budget for defense has again been hiked. As a matter of fact, India has been the biggest importer of defense equipment for the second year in a row. Given the turbulent relationship it shares with its neighbors in South-East Asia, the expenditure on defense is not likely to decrease any time soon.

However, the government is trying to ease off its dependence on foreign manufacturers of defense equipment. As part of its ‘Make in India‘ initiative, the Indian Government is trying to attract native manufacturers to take part in the bidding process for supplying equipment to the Indian Army. These plans of the government include transforming India from being a weapon importer to weapon exporter. Another important step for the Indian defense sector has been the decision of the government to deal with the governments other countries directly when it comes to acquiring new defense equipment and support vehicles.

The Indian Navy is slated for a major revamp as India looks to counter the growing dominance of China in the Indian Ocean and adjoining seas. Bills have already been sanctioned for the procurement of state-of-the-art submarines and other naval vessels. Indian Air Force is also going to see new additions in the form of latest fighter jets. The government has long been trying to retire the aging jet fighters and replace them with the latest fighter jets. The deals for these acquisitions are finally set to go through.
