KENT, Ohio - May 13, 2015 - PRLog -- Two Kent State University College of Business Administration Marketing and Entrepreneurship faculty’s research was recently accepted in the Journal of Business Venturing.

Sergey Anokin, Ph.D. and Cesar Zamudio, Ph.D. along with affiliated Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation (CEBI) member Karla Mendoza-Abarca, Ph.D. were accepted for their article, “Uncovering the Influence of Social Venture Creation on Commercial Venture Creation: A Population Ecology Perspective”

Their research takes a population ecology perspective to uncover the influence that social venture creation exerts on commercial venture creation. Data from 88 Ohio counties during 2003-2007 uncovered a negative relationship suggesting that social ventures compete for resources with commercial ventures at the time of founding. Additionally, they found that income levels in the county affected the inter-population dynamics between social and commercial ventures. Specifically, lower income levels exacerbated the competitive relationship between social and commercial ventures. Low levels of government spending on welfare were found to suppress commercial start-up rates.

“We found that social and commercial ventures compete strongly at the time of founding - previous research, on the other hand, proposed a more “symbiotic” or positive relationship among these ventures,” said Zamudio. “The implication of our finding is that, entrepreneurs should be aware that competition for startup resources can come from organizations with either a social or a commercial purpose. Such competition is also found to be more intense in low-income conditions. Thus, start-up entrepreneurs should plan accordingly.”

Mendoza-Abarca received her MBA and Ph.D. from Kent State University in 2009 and 2013 respectively. Her research interests include social entrepreneurship, social venture creation, entrepreneurial opportunities and creativity and innovation. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Anokhin received his Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University in 2006. His research interests include entrepreneurship and innovation management in a variety of contexts. His pioneering work on capturing arbitrage opportunities has provided novel insights into new venture creation as well as entrepreneurial migration. He also researches social entrepreneurship and works on developing metrics for social innovation. Anokhin is also the Interim Director of Kent State’s Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation (CEBI) at the College of Business Administration.

Zamudio investigates issues related to consumer choice, social networks, new product development and sensory marketing. His teaching interests include business analytics and entrepreneurial marketing. His research was distinguished with an Honorable Mention Award from the Marketing Science Institute's Alden G. Clayton Dissertation Proposal Competition in 2011, and a grant from the MSI's Research Competition on Mobile Platforms in 2013.

The Journal of Business Venturing is a multi-disciplinary, multi-functional and multi-contextual journal that only publishes 10 percent of submissions.

Through its cutting edge collaborative research, CEBI at Kent State University advances current understanding of entrepreneurship to guide and engage students, community members, academic researchers and policy makers thus making a positive difference in the entrepreneurial eco-system in Northeast Ohio and the world beyond our network of campuses.
