AUSTIN, Texas - May 12, 2015 - PRLog -- As lice season revs up in Texas, including in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, El Paso, San Antonio, and  many other areas, many people live in fear of contracting a case. The truth is no one is immune from lice, although certain groups are more likely candidates for lice than others. If a louse finds a human head, it will latch onto the hair and feed off the blood in the scalp three times a day. Once in the hair, the louse lays up to 10 eggs (nits) daily. Within two weeks those nits hatch and soon after start to lay their own eggs. At this point a case of head lice will increase rapidly on the head.

According to Wendy Beck, owner of LiceDoctors, a leading lice removal service in Texas, "We have seen many, many cases of head lice and I can assure you that if there is any hair on the head, even a buzz cut, the person is suseptible to head lice."

There is, however, a hierarchy of likelihood of contracting lice. According to Beck, preschool and kindergarten children, especially girls, are most likely to present with head lice. Beck explains, "The reason for that is this age child is in a classroom setting, exposed to other children, who are engaged in informal play. As children come head-to-head, that is how lice are transmitted. If one child in a class has it, we often hear from other children's families."

The next most common group for getting lice is moms of children in the 3-6 year old range. If a child that age has lice, the mothers have a 70% plus likelihood of getting it from their child. Siblings of these children are also likely candidates, although less so than moms.

Keep in mind that head lice is so prevalent in school aged children that it has caused significant absenteeism, which has propelled the American Pediatric Association and the National Association of School Nurses to urge schools to drop their no nit policies.Anywhere from an estimated 6 million to 12 million plus children between the ages of 3 to 11 years old will get lice this year.

Fathers and folks who live alone, as well as people who are completely bald, have very little chance of getting lice. If you are not in close contact with young children you are less likely to pick up a case, although it is certainly possible. All a louse wants is access to a warm head that contains its food source: blood. The longer and more accessible hair is, the easier it is for lice to find the hair and use it as a ladder to climb up to the scalp. According to Beck, "The dads usually escape without getting lice, although we have found lice in several dads. There is some evidence that lice do not like testerone."
