May Proclaimed As Indoor Air Quality & Healthier Pregnancy Awareness Month

LAS VEGAS - May 12, 2015 - PRLog -- As previously issued, the Governor of Nevada and the Clark County Commission proclaimed May as Toxic Encephalopathy/Chemical Injury Awareness Month. During the month of May, Nevadans are encouraged to reduce their use of chemicals that may pollute indoor air and create health concerns for pregnant women.

“Poor air quality impacts everyone, but especially those with asthma, heart conditions and chemical sensitivities,” said National Toxic Encephalopathy Foundation President and Executive Director Angel DeFazio. “During the month of May, we encourage people to seek healthier and safer alternatives to the toxic chemical products they may use in their homes and businesses and on their bodies.”

According to DeFazio, some ways to improve indoor air quality include:

  -    Frequent and thorough vacuuming with HEPA filters, while also cleaning the carpets with steam or vinegar.

  -    Eliminating the use of products, soaps, and cosmetics that contain heavy fragrance.

  -    Use of Integrated Pest Management rather than toxic pesticides to resolve vermin issues.

  -    Switching to true, environmentally friendly cleaning products. Eliminating those called ‘green’ with chemicals that actually make them toxic, and unsafe.

“We want to thank NV Energy who has been a supporter of our organization and has implemented a number of changes at its facilities to improve indoor air quality. We hope other companies follow suit,” DeFazio said.

Additionally, we are stressing safer and healthier pregnancies. Babies are being born ‘pre-polluted’ with 287 chemicals, including some that were banned in 1979 such as flame-retardants, pesticides, and even PCBs. These are just a few suggestions to reduce your chemical exposure during pregnancy:

  -    Stay away from scented products including personal care, candles, potpourri, essential oils, air fresheners, etc. These emit chemicals into the air that impact both you and your child. If at all possible buy an air filter to remove as many air pollutants as possible.

  -    Avoid EMF/RF i.e. if you have a smart meter replace it with the traditional analog meter that requires an actual meter reader. EMF/RF can be related to miscarriages and increased risk of behavioral and learning problems. [1]

  -    Forego renovating the baby’s room. Use non-VOC paints, carpeting and as much as possible provide organic furniture and bedding.

  -    Eat an organic diet. If not possible, purchase organic versions of high pesticide foods, which include most fruits and vegetables.

The core purposes of NTEF are to provide education and services to the growing segment of the population who are adversely affected by everyday chemicals and toxins in our environment. For more information visit NTEF-USA.Org and for safer products ChemicalFreeLiving.Com.
