Launch of prison produced art work from a resilient artist who turned his prison sentence from a negative situation into creating.

Turning a negative situation into a positive outcome with hard work and determination. This is a project about my journey from when I was detained, my struggle through the prison system and the barriers I encountered to achieve my goal. I had never painted before but after my first attempt to copy a painting when in custody, I noticed how my whole morning went by in a blur. I was not thinking about the immediate surroundings or the situation I found myself in and last but not least, I found that there was room for improvement, and I could paint! From that day onwards I found a new medium to work within for my storytelling and one that would become my only escapism from where I was awaiting trial. I became obsessed with painting which was noticed by the head of the art department.

Within a week of being there she managed to get me authorization to have a small easel and some small recycled plastic containers with acrylic paints to take back and work in my cell. I did several paintings on paper but moved on to recycling prison fire blankets and stapling them to three different sized old pieces of board that I found looking around the prison, then rolling them up and handing them to my daughter on her visits. I decided not to follow other artists or copy works as I felt that if I was to make my own statements I needed to focus on my feelings, emotions, internal conflicts and desires and put them on canvas. Each day I would paint at least ten hours as part of my routine and then watch the news before painting until the late hours of the night, then go to sleep and get up to go to class again starting a new day with new vigour. This was my way of disconnecting with time and not wasting it while there.

Since my release I have become enthusiastic about wanting to share my paintings and now find myself in the very exciting stages of planning an exhibit. I have managed to find a free space after a very intense six months of searching and have been given a date just six weeks from now! The place is free of charge but we will be donating a percentage of all sales to the charity www.uthinkpdp.org.uk to support the great work they do with arts and young people.

The exhibition will be a joint show with another ex-prisoner Louie Mac Manus www.louiemcmanus.com whom has a similar story, but the story varies in the fact that all his work was done on already stretched canvases that were given to him by a very good friend of his so that the pieces are ready to be hung. Mine however all were done on recycled prison fire blankets and need to be stretched in order to exhibit them.
