Stem Cell Injections May Reverse Macular Degeneration (AMD)

LEICESTER, U.K. - May 9, 2015 - PRLog -- Researchers have found that stem cell injections may soon be able to slow or even reverse damage caused by age related macular denegation (AMD) according to new research in the USA. Researcher at Cedar-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles were able to slow the progression of AMD in rat models.

The stem cells migrated to the affected area and formed a protective layer preserving the rats vision for 130 days – the equivalent of 16 years in humans.

The results support the therapeutic potential of treating AMD with a persons own stem cells. The research was published in the Journal Stem Cells.

‘As there is already an effective treatment for stabilising and even improving Wet AMD: it would be great if a treatment became available for dry AMD too as it’s the commonest cause of blindness in the western world and 80% of AMD is the dry type.
