From the Basement to the Cloud: Vancouver Startup Dusts off and Digitizes Your Old Photo Albums

“Current scanning solutions just don’t cut it,” said Kyle Nunweiler, a computer science student at UBC, and Sempix founder. ” It costs a fortune right now to get your photo albums scanned. Existing services require you to mail your photos away, but who wants to take the risk of sending your albums through the mail? It’s just an inconvenient solution. The point of Sempix is to make it easy for customers to affordably get their pictures scanned, quickly and without hassle or worry. Then they’re safe from damage and decay, they take up less room, and you have them on your computer, where you can add them to social media, or enjoy them any way you want. That’s why you took them in the first place - to enjoy them.”

There are numerous benefits to using the service but, according to Nunweiler, the original incentive to start Sempix came out of seeing damage caused by the 2013 Alberta Flood. “I’m from Calgary, and it was heartbreaking a few years ago to see all those photos get destroyed in people’s basements. Decades of memories gone.  It just doesn’t have to be like that in 2015 - there are ways to back things up and protect yourself from such a potentially terrible loss.”

Sempix Photo Services is open for business starting this week, and it services a vast area. Based out of Vancouver, it offers service as far as Chilliwack, Kelowna, Kamloops, Squamish, and Whistler, extending even to Victoria and Nanaimo. “Because we’re a mobile service, we have a huge amount of flexibility in the area that we can service,” Nunweiler said. “Basically anywhere west of the Rockies, including Vancouver Island, is welcome to give us a call and take advantage of what we offer.”
