By: Whaling City Sound Greg Abate is a jazz saxophonist, flutist, and composer, and an International Jazz/Recording Artist who tours the globe 225 days a year. In the mid 70’s after graduating from Berklee College of Music, Greg was the lead alto for the Ray Charles Orchestra for 2 years. Greg’s 2014 release on Whaling City Sound, Motif, hit #8 on the national JazzWeek charts. His 2012 release, The Greg Abate Quintet Featuring Phil Woods, led Phil Woods to say: “I sleep a lot better knowing there are alto players like Greg! It was a joy to make music with him and he writes good songs that are challenging.” Greg is an adjunct professor of Jazz Studies at Rhode Island College and an active jazz clinician with sponsorship from the Conn-Selmer Instrument Co., conducting workshops and master classes around the world. gregabate.com DAVE BASS This Cincinnati kid attended Berklee College of Music, studied with Madame Chaloff, gleaning an exquisite touch on piano and an appreciation for the spirituality of music, opened for Captain Beefheart, studied composition with George Russell, and toured the world with Brenda Lee before hitting 26. A wrist injury prevented Dave from playing and, forced to change gears, Dave got his B.A. (Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa), then graduated from UCLA Law School, beginning a 23-year career as an attorney. He just retired as a California Deputy Attorney General. Dave is back to music 24/7. As Phil Woods says about Dave’s 2015 release, NYC Sessions, “Man, this is a helluva recording!
