The 2015 Ford Edge Is a Job Creator

Ford's decision to invest $700 million in plants and equipment to produce the new 2015 Ford Edge will result in thousands of additional jobs in North America.

SALEM, Ore. - May 8, 2015 - PRLog -- With production of the new 2015 Ford Edge now underway at the Oakville Assembly plant in Canada, Ford has announced it will add another 400 employees to help build it. The all-new midsize utility vehicle, which debuts later this spring, has been completely redone for the first time since it was introduced in 2006. With new technology, improved craftsmanship and greatly improved vehicle dynamics, the Edge is being touted as the new standard in Ford cars in particular and two-row utility vehicles in general.

The additional 400 jobs at Oakville Assembly are on top of the 1,000 Ford announced in 2014. The first new workers were on the job in November building early versions of the Edge, and the final 400 are being added now. These newest Ford cars will eventually be shipped around the world, from North and South America to Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The addition of right-hand-drive and a diesel engine will allow the Edge to be exported for the first time to Western Europe as well. However, none of this takes into account what's known as the "multiplier effect."

The multiplier effect is the incremental impact of each dollar spent on Ford cars as it works its way through the economy. For instance, the 1,400 new slots created for production of the 2015 Ford Edge are just the tip of the job-creation iceberg. Ford cars had already invested almost $200 million in the Cleveland Engine Plant and added 450 jobs there to build the vehicle's new 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine.

When a major new vehicle component is purchased from a supplier, that supplier typically has to add jobs and invest in the facilities needed to produce it. There's also the impact the tier 1 supplier has on demand for parts at the next tier, and finally in the raw materials like copper, steel and coated wire to produce them all. The result is pressure at every level to make incremental investments in hiring workers.

It's impossible to know exactly how many jobs will ultimately be created by Ford's investment. But the rule of thumb in the auto industry is that each dollar invested has a multiplier effect of 3x. It seems safe to say, then, the company's $700 million investment to make the 2015 Ford Edge a global vehicle will result in the creation of thousands of additional jobs in North America.
