Pro Pharma’s Educational Team recognized for “Giving Back to Pharmacist Educational Practice”

“Introducing students to their role as a Pharmacist in the healthcare community can be the on of the most rewarding and satisfying experiences of your professional career”, states Dr. Craig Stern, President of Pro Pharma

CANOGA PARK, Calif. - May 7, 2015 - PRLog -- As many of you may know, the doctor of pharmacy degree requires completion of four to five years at an accredited university or college of pharmacy.  Most students applying for admission into schools of pharmacy already have an undergraduate degree in another field related to the sciences in some fashion or another which brings them additional knowledge and expertise.   Rotations at experiential sites are required in most pharmacy doctoral programs in six (6) week increments/rotations at each site. This requires experiential preceptor Pharmacists to take their knowledge, skills, and values as a professional pharmacist, and function in the role of a clinical teacher or preceptor and utilize that expertise to guide students to the next level.

Pro Pharma  offers an experiential “fourth/fifth year” Managed Care, “out-of-the-box” rotation which challenges students to take their academic knowledge and apply it into practice on a daily basis, in preparation for graduation.  Carol Stern, CEO of Pro Pharma goes on further to state, “this transports students from a group academic experience in traditional auditoriums and conference halls, into a one-on-one workplace setting, where they can be involved in current, relevant and practice-changing healthcare issues and research for our Clients”.  Dr. Barry Pascal, Consulting Pharmacist at Pro Pharma goes on further to state, that “students have been waiting for several years to put into practice what they have learned in the classroom.  It is our privilege to guide them through this transition by involving them in Client initiatives, analysis and work projects.”  In this way, students are encouraged to become good problem solvers, utilizing information integrated from a variety of sources.

Pro Pharma feels that this is our way of ensuring that students are more prepared post-graduation, by empowering students to ask questions, search for answers, and become independent learners. Rather than “telling” students what they need to know, our able preceptors “guide” students through thoughtful questioning and encouraging feedback.

In interviewing our current students in rotation from both the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of the Pacific (UOP), they state the following, “We believe the rotation at Pro Pharma Pharmaceutical Consultants, Inc. is a great one in that students are immersed in the world of managed care (of which we knew very little prior) and view the practice of pharmacy from a different perspective.  We are allowed to see first-hand from the eyes of Pro Pharma’s Clients, how pharmacy interacts with other entities and organizations, such as insurance companies, PBMs, etc.  In this way, we can see the “bigger picture” as to how the system as a whole functions (and at times, doesn’t function)”, state Pantea Ghasemi (USC) and Sarkis Kavarian (UOP).

Please think about joining Pro Pharma in their endeavors to educate the Pharmacy Student Community with Summer Internship Opportunities which may lead to further educational and experiential opportunities in the Pharmacy profession.

We wish all of the New Pharmacy School Graduates of the Class of 2015 success in entering a field full of challenges, opportunities, and making a difference in healing and healthcare.

About Comprehensive Specialty Analyses™
Comprehensive Specialty Analyses™ utilizes a multi-pronged approach to analyze pharmacy and medical encounter claims through problem flagging, feedback on performance, peer to peer comparison, and others. Comprehensive Specialty Analyses™ specifically identify pricing differences, usage, trends, and actionable opportunities in the medical data that were not apparent in the past. It is necessary to view the Medical Data from multiple perspectives, i.e., a 360 degree view that allows for seeing beyond the obvious of top drugs spend and top providers as well as compare and contrast it with the Pharmacy Claims Data.

About JCode Calculator™
Pro Pharma has developed a Standardized Injectable Fee Schedule to assist with the management of claims payment.   The advantage to this product is that it bases all Injectable reimbursement on AWP, WAC and ASP cost, and can be customized for drug category discounts or multiple discounts based on drug type or specialty. It includes at least one AWP for every HCPS Code and CPT code description; NDC, brand name, generic name, strength, package size, etc.

About Invoice Screening™
About 10% of drugs spend is being paid from PBM Invoices, and should have been rejected by clients prior to payment.   Pro Pharma’s Invoice Screening™ analyzes invoices against:  formulary compliance, compliance with MAC pricing, eligibility, claims pricing, invalid claims, and excluded benefits, pre-payment as an Accounts Payable function.  This ensures that clients only pay for valid claims, which saves time and dollars in the long run.
