Follow on Google News | Hitchcock Chair Company to Host Annual Memorial Day Barn SaleAfter having been re-opened in 2010, the internationally-famous Hitchcock Chair Company in bucolic Riverton, Connecticut, will host their annual Memorial Day barn sale May 23-25th.
By: The Hitchcock Chair Company Treasured by families around the world, the rich heritage of hand-crafted Hitchcock furniture began in the early 1800’s when Lambert Hitchcock, America’s most famous chair maker at that time, began making his “fancy chairs” and cabinets in the small northwestern Connecticut village then-named Hitchcocks-ville and now called Riverton. Hitchcock created a legendary identity for his hand-crafted furniture in oak, maple and cherry woods through the application of elaborate stencil designs with complementary striping and banding to accent the contours. Every piece of Hitchcock furniture is made individually by skilled craftsmen to last for generations. Hitchcock Chair Company’s distinctive furnishings feature three separate lines to meet individual tastes. The Hitchcock Classic Collection is made of hard maple and is best known for the beautiful stencils applied over paint or clear finishes. The Pleasant Hill Collection features the simplicity of Shaker designs made in solid cherry, while the Country Heritage emphasizes country French influences with the more casual look of wormy soft maple. Hitchcock’s annual Barn Sale includes floor samples, scratched and dented pieces, factory seconds, discontinued styles, older restored pieces, and vintage items that have been collected, all offered at reduced prices. Many of Hitchcock Chair’s thousands of loyal customers who flock from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania for this annual event, look through the company’s ever-changing inventory of old parts for inspiration for their own creations. Celebrating its fifth year in 2015 of being ‘re-opened’ For four years after the original Hitchcock Chair Company closed its doors in 2006, the name of the company laid dormant. In 2010, owners Swenson and Hath purchased the Hitchcock name, plans and artwork with the ambition to continue the Hitchcock legacy and bring the furniture lines into the 21st century while maintaining the original quality and integrity of Lambert Hitchcock’s original dream. “We recognize the unique hand-crafted quality of Hitchcock furniture, and we are working to keep the Hitchcock brand alive and thriving.” Prior to 2010 Swenson strove for that same ambition through his own Still River Antiques store in Riverton, Connecticut which featured fully-restored Hitchcock furniture. In partnership with Hath, and highly-dedicated business assistance from Nancy Swenson, the team today proudly keeps the ‘Hitchcock integrity and fame’ available for individuals and families worldwide. The Hitchcock Chair Memorial Day Barn Sale will be held rain or shine in the main barn at the Riverton Fairgrounds and at the Hitchcock Chair retail store at 13 Riverton Road in Riverton.
