Sacred Heart School students take second place in regional Civics Bee

KINGSTON, Mass. - May 5, 2015 - PRLog -- Sacred Heart School (www.sacredheartkingston.com), a private, Catholic, co-educational school for students in preschool through grade 12, proudly announces a team of four students representing the school placed second in a regional Civics Bee held March 22^nd at The Spire Center for Performing Arts in Plymouth.

Students in grades 7-12 were invited to participate.  The Sacred Heart team was comprised of 12^th grader Tim Kuketz of Pembroke; 10^th grader Jake Tibbetts of Barnstable; 7^th grader Kayla Turner of Middleboro; and 7^th grader Jacob Garrett of Kingston.  The students competed against teams from Carver, Duxbury, Plymouth North and Plymouth South at the event, placing an impressive second.  Taking first place was Plymouth North, a team of four seniors.

The Civics Bee, moderated by Plymouth Town Manager Melissa Arrighi, required an in depth and diverse body of knowledge on a broad field of topics, including voting, local, state and federal government, the Supreme Court and the Constitution.  Sample questions ranged from “what do you do if you have made a mistake on your official voting ballot?” to “what year was the 15^th Amendment to the Constitution ratified?”

The four Sacred Heart team members were selected following a highly attended try out in February, a process which included a mock Naturalization Test from the official US government website.  All participants scored within the 21-25 correct answer range out of 25 questions, making for a very difficult decision when selecting team members.

Social Studies teacher Sarah Ward and coach for Team Sacred Heart said, “I am so proud of our team, both for the remarkable body of knowledge displayed and the positive attitudes they exhibited.  They knew the answers to questions that would be difficult for many adults, but at the same time smiled throughout and genuinely enjoyed the experience.”

Ward noted that the Sacred Heart team was comprised of both middle school and high school students, adding to the impressiveness of their performance and second place win.

“The entire student body is elated by the way this team of four represented Sacred Heart at the challenging Civics Bee,” said Sacred Heart School President Pamela Desmarais.  “The way in which they performed stands as a prime example of the extraordinary sense of community that is fostered at our school, both in and outside of the classroom.”
