CHARLOTTE, N.C. - May 5, 2015 - PRLog -- Clark Nexsen was awarded the 2015 Certificate of Merit Award for Excellence in Design from the North Carolina State Building Commission for the Winston-Salem State University Hill Hall Renovation & New Student Success Center.

The WSSU Student Success Center, previously known as Hill Hall, was originally designed as a science building in 1964, which sat centrally located in the heart of WSSU’s campus, vacant for seven years. WSSU worked with a design team of architects and engineers from Clark Nexsen’s Charlotte office to renovate the existing 31,873 square-feet of usable space, plus an addition of almost 7,000 square-feet, into a vibrant, attractive success center.

While the outside of the building remains historically relevant to its surrounding structures, the inside was completely redesigned, is equipped with advanced technology including a feature media wall, and filled with academic support systems and recreational spaces, plus an Einstein Bros Bagels. The learning areas are designed for both individual and community learning, allowing every office and workroom to transform into an open common space. The new, 38,021 square-foot Student Success Center pulls multiple academic departments into one location, inviting students to actively practice community learning in a work-friendly environment.

Architects Angela Ritter and Jason Jones from Clark Nexsen’s Charlotte office accepted the Certificate of Merit Award on behalf of the design team on March 27 at the Annual State Construction Conference held in Raleigh.

The Hill Hall Renovation & New Student Success Center was also recently honored with the 2015 American Society of Civil Engineers’ Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI) Award for Excellence in Electrical Design.  The project recently achieved LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council in recognition of sustainability.
