May 6, 2015 - PRLog -- Call it the "steel ceiling" – and the next challenge for women’s employment opportunities in the 21st Century. A  U.S. Department of Commerce study shows only one in seven engineers are women, and women account for as little as 27 percent of all computer science workers. While advances for women have been made in fields such as healthcare and law, sexism or at best gender preference, still exists in technical fields.

A Minnesota Breakthrough has happened since one of the longest-running technical colleges in the country, Dunwoody College of Technology in Minneapolis, MN, has put in place a series of initiatives to encourage interest in technical subjects for women of all ages and backgrounds, such as helping younger age girls understand STEM career possibilities and establishing a program designed specifically to help women from disadvantaged backgrounds enter a STEM profession. A grant from Kellogg Foundation has enabled the hiring of a Coordinator of Women’s Enrollment to focus specifically on STEM opportunities for women and an emphasis on role model hiring for departmental deans: recruiting women experienced in technical fields into departmental leadership positions, including Bridget Reynolds, Academic Dean of Construction Sciences & Building Technology.  Other initiatives include involvement in regional and national robotics and other technical contests and competitions for pre-college aged students.

PDP Solutions’ President Louise Dickmeyer, is proud that Minnesota is creating breakthroughs for the next generation of women in manufacturing.  The company supports manufacturers who outsource communication so they can stay focused on attracting the best employees.
