The aesthetic of Throwing Stars Jewelry has changed over the past 12 years as Leff learned how to work with different materials. She started with beading, and has now evolved to create original pieces out of mixed metals, pendants and natural stones. When it comes to the actual design and development of each piece, Leff begins by sketching designs on paper and then working in her studio, cutting lengths of chain, twisting and bending wire, setting stones, soldering metals together, shaping, texturing and polishing until she has a finished product worthy of the Throwing Stars Jewelry label. Because all of her pieces are hand crafted, no two pieces will be identical, similar, but not exact replicas, which lends itself to the individuality of each piece.

Clients often ask Leff to design something original based on an idea or wanting to reset family stones. Customization and collaboration are important when creating jewelry for customers, because when a client is part of the design, Leff believes the final product is all the more meaningful.

Curious about the name Throwing Stars Jewelry? “My jewelry has nothing to do with a ninja’s weapon. The name comes from a poem I wrote. When I was ready to start my jewelry business, I found inspiration in one of the lines that read: ‘I took a chance late one night, I threw those stars in the sky.’ So that’s what I did; I took a chance and I haven’t looked back.”
