Map-based business decision-making in just three minutes

MAPMECHANICS’ clear, accessible video guides users through the benefits

April 30, 2015 - PRLog -- How can map-based data help simplify complex business decisions? A short company video released by MAPMECHANICS, one of the leading specialists in map data and geographic information systems (GIS), answers that deceptively simply question in just three minutes.

In an era when mapping and location-based services and solutions are everywhere, it can be a challenge for any organisation to decide how to harness these apparently diverse resources in a methodical, cost-effective way that yields measurable benefits.

The video takes viewers clearly and logically through a range of possible reasons for using map data, describing the opportunities it offers and suggesting some of the many ways in which it can offer benefits.

At the start of the presentation, Mapmechanics’ director and founder Mary Short explains: “Companies come to us when they want to change or improve a business process. Perhaps you want more profit, you need to expand (or contract), you need to increase revenue, or you just want to do more with the resources you have.”

Users might want to answer a variety of questions, she says. “Which locations generate the most revenue? Which locations have the greatest footfall? How can I route my vehicles efficiently?”

The presentation goes on to describe how Mapmechanics extracts and collates data to produce meaningful business information for use in a host of location-based solutions.

Alex Bridges describes and illustrates a range of applications such as determining catchment areas that can be reached within a given time from a known starting point, and analysing patterns of travel derived from billions of mobile phone signals.

Not only can data be represented graphically on a map, he points out; it can also be shown in “four-dimensional” form, with the colours and contours of the display changing to represent the passing of time.

In the logistics world, he continues, links to the company’s TRUCKSTOPS routing and scheduling system can be seamlessly embedded in other applications such as order management, tracking and mobile computing – creating fully integrated solutions.

In the broader field of business intelligence, mapping can help users to monitor trends, build territories and analyse geodemographics. Links are available for a range of major third-party solutions such as Oracle, SQL Server, Tibco, Click and Tableau.

Mapmechanics supplies and configures mapping, business and demographic data from around the world. It also develops and supplies the Truckstops routing and scheduling optimisation solution, and supplies the Geoconcept geographic information system.
