How to Avoid Sabotaging Your Interview

Interviews not going well? You may be throwing a wrench into your gears without even knowing.

In recent conversations with my candidates I’ve been talking about how sabotaging yourself is real easy, all starting with putting together a resume that may “kill you” rather than sell you. It’s the little things that many people are unaware of that move you from possibility to unknown. Many of us believe our skills are so good, and in such high demand, that anyone who receives our resume will want to talk with us instantly. Rather than having a resume that sells you to get that interview, it blocks you from ever being seen. And even though we’re all “legends in our minds,” you need to be heard in order to be seen.

What can prevent you from being heard? I received a very interesting newsletter from Marc Cenedella of The Ladders titled “Three ways you're sabotaging yourself”

Below are a few bulleted commonly made mistakes. (My comments after each.)

Can a stranger read your resume?
More importantly, can a stranger differentiate you from the crowd?
If they can’t, you’re just in a pile. Forgotten.

Did you talk to a live person today?
If you did, you’re a unique individual, unless it was a preset appointment. I can hardly get to talk with a representative from companies I send money to, even though they tell me “your call is very important to us”.
You may be blocked by a company’s OCR and never know it. You’ve wasted your time even applying to the company. Actually you didn’t apply.
Don’t know what an OCR is? You’re not alone.

Email address
Does your e-m address represent you? Is it classy or is it “cutesy”?
And you never thought that was an issue?

Yes there are many issues, any one of which can that can prevent you from being “heard”.
