A Cutting Edge Choral Music Experience

Tulsa Children's Chorus Takes First Place at Heartland Music Festival

TULSA, Okla. - April 24, 2015 - PRLog -- For the second year in a row, Tulsa Children's Chorus took home the highest-level recognition, Sweepstakes Award, at the Heartland Music Festival.  On Saturday, April 18, 2015, choristers met at 7:30am to depart for the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) to participate in one of the most well respected choral competitions in the state of Oklahoma. Upon arrival, the Tulsa Children's Chorus prepared for their performance with a quick warm-up.

The festival manager made a brief statement and introduction before the singers gave one of the most heartfelt choral demonstrations  of the year. The first piece performed was "Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika," which was taught to the Tulsa Children's Chorus by the African Children's Choir for their joining concert in February of this year. The second piece performed was "This Ol' Man," an arrangement by Greg Gilpin of the very familiar folk song.

Following their performance, the Tulsa Children's Chorus was awarded with a preliminary "Superior" rating - the highest possible. This award was based on a number of things - vocal skill, difficulty of the repertoire and choral presence. Both soloists, Zac Kirchhoff and Adrian Zano, received awards for their youthfully advance musicianship - Zac for singing an advanced solo on Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika and Adrian for playing percussion.

The singers then headed to Frontier City for an afternoon of games, rides and good friendship. That evening, the singers gathered with hundreds of other choir members from other choral organizations around the state to share in the celebration of collaborative artistic appreciation. After several award recognitions, the judges announced that the Tulsa Children's Chorus was to receive the First Place Sweepstakes Award for best choral performance!

The Tulsa Children's Chorus, under the direction of Ashlee Elmore, enriches the lives of children within the Tulsa-metro area through a choral music experience that is second to none. Elmore's rich knowledge of the Kodaly methodology, attributed to the singers' admiration of quality choral music performance strategies,  resulted in their being recognized as one of the top choral music organizations in the state of Oklahoma for the second year in a row. This kind of cutting edge choral music experience is distinct and that is why Tulsa Children's Chorus instills a life-long love of music to young singers from all around Tulsa.
