April 21, 2015 - PRLog -- With all the fuss about body cameras a little known start-up is quietly changing the game by harnessing the power of mobile phones to do the job conventional body cameras do. The truth is mobile phones are amazing and improvements come fast.

Functional Mobilewear, a start-up  out of Chicago, Illinois is out to get GoPro and Taser, or so it may seem.  All of the mentioned companies produce technology based wearables that enable handsfree multimedia captures via cameras. Ironically, only one of these companies also enables real time streaming, mobile apps, multiple secure placements and angle adjustment in one package.

Chalk up one for the little guy.  That company is Functional Mobilewear (FMW) and they are quietly changing the game because their propreitary modular device pocket systems can make any phone into a body camera.  If you do the global numbers the potential market is staggering.

But are TransparencyNOW! Wearables really a threat to GoPro's Hero and Taser's Axon Flex?

As disruptive as these new wearables may seem to GoPro and Taser, the threat may be minimal to GoPro as GoPro has an extreme action following versus FMW's appeal to the common man who will use it primarily for hands free fun activities.

The threat to Taser is more complicated.  Once higher ups notice how long it will take to deploy body cameras on 800,000 U.S. cops (on track for the year 2030) and once higher ups notice the taxpayer burden and expense is what's slowing down the pace of deployment, then yes, TransparencyNOW! Wearables will be a direct threat to Taser's camera sales.  BUT, the great news is that Taser has developed a mobile app called Evidence Mobile that is the perfect companion app to a wearable mobile phone.  A partnership with a wearable mobile device company would enable Taser to sign up Evidence Mobile subscriptions at a blistering pace as the wearables can be deployed on all 800,000 U.S. cops within 3 years.

Understandably Taser is not going to just let it's camera sales go by the wayside (they just sold 30,000 body cameras to the UK) however, it will probably prove to be a smart move if they incorporated the wearable phone option into their strategic plan for Evidence Mobile growth.

Before someone else does their own version of that app and subscription model for the secure upload, storage and retrieval of evidence. Truth is there's a 4B dollar within 5 years opportunity for whoever dominates this new space.

Pumped up as he was do you think this cop would have shot this man in the back if he KNEW he was being recorded? Would the man have ran away to begin with if he knew HE was being recorded?  The sooner we get cops in body cameras, the better for all.
