INDIANAPOLIS - April 21, 2015 - PRLog -- Actor, choreographer and national health advocate Darrin Henson deliver the keynote address during the 11th Annual Statewide HIV Awareness Program in Indianapolis on April 23. The event is free and open to the public, and hopes to raise community awareness about HIV prevention, testing, and treatment.

“This year’s theme is ‘It’s Your Turn to Prevent HIV/AIDS: Individual Call to Action,’” said Tony Gillespie, Director of Public Policy and Engagement for the Indiana Minority Health Coalition. “The thing we know for sure is that HIV is 100% preventable, yet there are still people becoming infected every year - especially our young people. If we are ever going to beat this disease, we have to reduce the fear and stigma of the disease and increase knowledge of the facts.”

Health officials said more than 10,000 Indiana residents are currently living with HIV and that the chronic disease disproportionately affects minorities. Through community education, and increasing access to quality health care, Gillespie said he hopes the participating organizations will be able to make a measurable impact.
