Law Firm Brings Modern Legal Services to American Samoa

It was created by former American Samoa Bar Association President, Sean Morrison.

Formerly an Assistant Attorney General in American Samoa, Morrison returned to the mainland in 2012. However, he has remained active in legal issues facing American Samoa. “I learned about the new tools attorneys use to help clients,” said Morrison, “and found this technology could really help the American Samoan people with their legal needs.”

After starting his solo practice in 2013, he began designing an online law firm to serve American Samoa. The result is www.AmSamLaw.com. “I work a lot with businesses throughout the country,” explained Morrison. “American Samoa Legal will be a great way to connect American Samoans with mainland opportunities, and introduce mainland businesses to the territory.”

American Samoa Legal’s online model allows clients to work directly with attorneys through a secure client portal where the attorney and client can speak, exchange documents, and even pay bills.

Of course, with an online law firm there are some limitations. American Samoa Legal will not help with litigation and courtroom appearances, though they would be happy to help find an attorney if you need those services. Also, American Samoa Legal only takes phone calls until noon, due to the time difference. However, many legal matters do not require face-to-face meetings and waiting rooms. Many people are simply seeking affordable advice, legal documents, business assistance, contract reviews, and other transactional legal matters.

Despite these limitations, Morrison is optimistic about changing the legal landscape of the territory. “We work online because then we can reach you anywhere. If you can do your banking, shopping, and socializing online, why can’t you manage your legal matters online as well?” Morrison sees the online law firm model as being perfect for American Samoa.
