HIGH PEAK, U.K. - April 15, 2015 - PRLog -- A V Dawson, the North East based, multi-modal transport and logistics contractor, has installed four overhead cranes, from Street Crane Company, the UK’s largest industrial crane and hoist builder. The company’s new facility will hold buffer stocks of steel for regional automotive and construction plant manufacturers. Here the 30 tonnes capacity cranes will receive and despatch up to 290,000 tonnes of steel coil each year.

The building configuration and intense workload demanded crane beams of high strength allied to bespoke heavy duty hoists. The four double girder cranes are of box girder design to achieve the required strength and rigidity over their 35 metre span. These are fitted with Street heavy duty VX wire rope hoists partnered with flashing beacons, approach alarms and an anti-collision system that will maintain a safe separation distance between the cranes at all times, to ensure greater safety.

All VX hoists are custom built, but have common features that contribute to their high performance in intensive lifting and moving applications. The open frame heavy duty chassis provides a stable platform for the electro-mechanical components and gives good access for easy servicing. Space between key components also allows efficient heat dissipation so they operate with less stress. The VX is a true vertical lift design so the heavy loads can be placed precisely and lifted without any sideways movement.

Due to the 264 metre length of the building, four cranes are needed for zoned stock management. Full length platforms on each crane ensure safe access for servicing. A V Dawson’s managing director, Gary Dawson, explained, “Street overhead travelling cranes were selected because they have given good and reliable performance elsewhere in the business. The fact that many of our suppliers and customers, including TATA steel distribution centres, also use Street was further reassurance. We also like to support other British manufacturers.”

The facility is truly multi-modal. Steel coils are offloaded directly from train trucks for later transfer from store to commercial road vehicles to meet the just-in-time production needs of local manufacturers.

The VX hoist is a robust heavy duty hoist design.  To meet the exceptional needs of this application, mechanical components are rated M8, recognising the high number of lifts and frequency of travel along the vast bay.

The steel store is futureproofed and has many sustainability features. Heat is sourced from a deep ground bore with electricity being produced by solar arrays on one side of the roof to reduce long term energy costs and give greater energy security. To protect the product from condensation a constant temperature and humidity will be maintained in the building. Rainwater harvesting from the roof, linked to a balance pond, meets the sustainable urban drainage (SUDS) requirements so that storm run-off from the building does not immediately enter the drainage network.
