Intelligent LED lighting proves ideal for warehouse and production lighting

LEDs provide bright, even lighting from ceiling to floor

Earlsmann’s trial provided a direct comparison of the traditional lighting against the Brighton S 120W LED low bay units with 20-degree reflectors. This beam angle is perfectly suited to the warehouse’s 2.5m wide narrow aisles, directing light where it’s needed. As a result of the trial, the company selected Brighton S lighting sensors that are programmed to maintain a light level of 150 lux – a significant improvement on the 50 lux provided by the traditional lighting and at a much lower whole life cost.

The Brighton S units installed at the warehouse are mounted at ceiling height, 14m from ground level, and provide a low-maintenance solution that can be programmed and controlled from the floor. The motion sensors ensure light is available only when it is needed, while daylight harvesting sensors allow the lighting to work at minimum output by taking advantage of available daylight – maximising the efficiency and lifespan of the LEDs.

In the production hall the Brighton S lights are mounted much lower and have a wide beam angle to provide uniform lighting over a large area.

Keeping cool with active thermal feedback

At the 14m-high ceiling level where the lights are installed, ambient temperatures in summer can be considerable. Earlsmann identified that these could exceed maximum operating temps for both the LEDs and power supplies (drivers), normally 50°C. The driver protects against this risk by using active thermal feedback to control output and maintain safe operating conditions for the LEDs, preventing premature failure.

Brighton S LED lighting – a flexible solution

Earlsmann provided its client with a complete service, from surveys and light simulation trials to supplying LED units designed for the specific on-site operating conditions and requirements.  The Brighton S is fully dimmable and the self-contained sensors are adjustable from ground level.  While the 20-degree beam angle is ideal for lighting narrow aisles, interchangeable 35- and 50-degree reflectors are also available, making the Brighton S a flexible option for accommodating any change of use in the building.

The new LED lighting has enabled the client to cut energy costs, reduce maintenance spend and boost its green credentials – saving over 90% and ensuring compliance with forthcoming legislation. The Engineering Manager confirmed that the company is extremely pleased with the result, adding; “we were so impressed with the power saving we had to double check our calculation”.
