COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - April 13, 2015 - PRLog -- The entire Tim Gill Center for Public Media will be humming this Saturday with the energy of citizens getting involved in running their own radio station. KCMJ, the city’s new community radio station, will be running live shows in the studio, offering training workshops, and conducting roundtable discussions inviting citizen input.

EVENT: Community Radio Workshop & Open House
April 18, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Tim Gill Center for Public Media, 315 E. Costilla St.

Workshops include Hosting a Radio Show, Mixing a Radio Show, and Editing a Show, Field Recording and Citizen Journalism. Roundtable discussions include conversations about promotion, fundraising, branding, and the program schedule and mix. The full schedule is at http://www.kcmj.org/workshop.

Visitors who drop in can get refreshments, studio tours, and information about the project. Non-profit and other community leaders are invited to a bring-your-own-brown-bag-lunch discussion to shape the station’s new Community Advisory Board. Volunteers will also be recording public service announcements for local non-profits. The event begins at 9 a.m. and wraps up with live music and poetry on stage from 5 to 6 p.m.

After moving into the new corner studio at the Tim Gill Center for Public Media in January, the non-commercial, volunteer-run project is now running a regular, predictable schedule, including eleven local shows (see list on next page), with more in development. The rest of the schedule is filled with a fascinating array of thoughtful and unique syndicated programs, offering music and perspectives not commonly found on the airwaves in town.

Recent, noteworthy additions to the syndicated lineup include Alternative Radio, Inside Europe, Indigenous in Music, Big Picture Science, Filmspotting, Rock School, and CounterSpin. Community Progressive News runs every weekday at 5.

The Colorado Media Justice Foundation, which operates KCMJ, recently received 501(c)3 non-profit determination from the IRS. KCMJ is currently streaming on the internet at www.kcmj.org. The station hopes to begin broadcasting at its FCC-licensed 93.9 FM frequency by mid-Summer, once sufficient funds are raised. KCMJ is a non-commercial, non-profit, volunteer-run community radio station. Its mission is to inform, engage, entertain, and empower the citizens of our community. Media representatives are welcome at the April 18 event. Interviews and photo opportunities can also be arranged in advance of April 18.
