The Boston Center for Adult Education (BCAE) is helping Boston residents and visitors alike make the most of their spring and summer with a must-do list of outdoor classes to discover and explore Boston! Soak in the sun while discovering this city through walking, kayaking, or hiking. See below for additional class details.

A Walking Tour of the South End

Explore this delightful neighborhood on foot, and discover the topographical and architectural development of this fascinating, multicultural, urban community. The tour will encompass an 1810 burial ground, an 1830s wooden house tucked away in an alley, and a number of charming masonry town houses.

Hiking Back in Time: Wellesley & Needham

Join Phyllis Mays, a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club and an amateur history buff, in a 2½ hike/walk to historic sites in Wellesley and Needham. Meet at the trailhead at Beard Way and Grove Street in Wellesley to walk the Beard Trail, connecting to the North Trail and then to Ridge Hill Reservation in Needham where the class will lunch.

A Walking Tour of Beacon Hill: The North Slope

Discover the 19th-century townhouses and turn-of-the-century tenements of Beacon Hill's North Slope. Meet at the corner of Charles Street and Charles Circle, in front of the CVS pharmacy (directly across from the Charles Street Red Line MBTA station).

A Walking Tour of Fort Point Channel Neighborhood

Summer is the perfect time to explore the Fort Point Channel neighborhood, a bustling          area that's home to museums, artists' studios, restaurants, and lofts. Once the center of   the world's wool industry, it's also the birthplace of the safety razor and Valentine's Day candy hearts! We'll meet in front of South Station, at the corner of Atlantic and Summer Streets.

Tuesday, May 19th, 2015/ 6:00PM-8:00PM: Tuition: $20

A Walking Tour: Copley Sq.

This tour will focus on the world class historic buildings in the area including churches: New Old South and Trinity as well as viewings of interiors in the Boston Public Library and Copley Plaza Hotel. Among the architects we'll discuss are H.H. Richardson, Ralph Adams Cram and Phillip Johnson. In addition we will consider the work of artists such as the painter John Singer Sargent, sculptor Agusts Saint Gaudens and wood carver John Evans. The tour meets in front of the Dartmouth Street entrance to the Boston Public Library at 6PM.

Boston Sunset Kayak Tour

Paddle down the Charles River and take a romantic tour of the Boston skyline at dusk. There's not better way to spend a summer evening in Boston than being active and finding a quaint couple of hours out on the beautiful Charles River while you take in the best view of the city you'll be able to find.

An Introduction to Sailing

Piers Park Sailing and the BCAE have teamed up to bring you a special discounted 4 hour class that will cover the basics of sailing in one day on the Boston Harbor. You'll experience views of the Boston skyline while in a group setting outdoors on the water. Whether you've always wanted to get out and try this perfect activity or used to sail and want to brush up on your skills, this is the class for you!

Hiking Back in Time: Charles River & Waban Arches

Walk along Sudbury Path bordering the Charles River to the historic Waban Arches, a National Register of Historic Places treasure. On our return we will tour the Guernsey Sanctuary, roaming the banks of man-made Sabrina Lake, built by sewing machine magnate William Emerson Baker as part of his “playground for the wealthy.”

Boston Skyline Kayak Tour

The BCAE and Charles River Canoe & Kayak have teamed up to bring you a special discounted rate for a tour of the Charles River with Boston's historic skyline in the background. The class will being with a quick introduction to kayak strokes, then you'll launch a double kayak and begin your paddle along the Cambridge shoreline.

A Walking Tour of Bay Village and the Theatre District

Tour Park Square - once a major railroad transportation hub - and view great landmarks such as the Castle, a massive granite building constructed during the 1890s, as well as the Park Plaza Hotel, a late 1920s symbol of the glamour and prosperity associated with the Roaring '20s.

How to Survive in the Wild

Shut down your cell phone, decompress, and prove your mettle by learning essential outdoor survival skills from the experts at the REI Outdoor School. You'll have the chance to learn the best ways to set-up camp for maximum safety and comfort, what you need to know for backwoods camping, how to deal with specific wild animals, priorities in emergency situations, and many other practical outdoor skills.
