VICTORIA, British Columbia - April 10, 2015 - PRLog -- Webmaps… we all love them, but many of us struggle to decide on the best way to create/build them. Webmaps are the ideal solution for those with a need to mashup, create and share spatial data. With the web and the Internet browser as the canvas, webmaps are the natural solution for telling a story using data, cartography, and graphics via an environment and user interface that is second nature to most web users.

When it comes to selecting a tool for authoring and sharing a webmap there’s many options, some being more complex and detailed than others. With the explosion in publicly available, open data products being made available via government websites and Open Data portals, pretty much anyone can now mashup data and create a fun and useful webmap. The following are just 5 tools that any budding webmap author should consider for building awesome, shareable webmaps:

Story Maps - Developed by mapping leader, Esri, Story Maps are lightweight, open source web apps that are housed in the cloud using the powerful ArcGIS Online. The Story Map service is complemented by an information rich blog with tutorials, examples, and tricks, and there’s also a number of easy to use templates to help you get up and running fast. Those familiar with ARcGIS Online and the Esri authoring environment will gravitate to this platform, however, anyone can jump in!

CartoDB – This easy-to-use, open map visualization tool is very powerful and gaining lots of momentum. CartoDB, launched in 2012, is a cloud-based mapping, analysis and visualization engine that lets users build spatial applications for both mobile and the web. The service is free to try and also is offered as an enterprise solution and enables anyone to create visually stunning and cartographically pleasing webmaps. The open source fanatics and GeoGeeks really love this app and for the more tech-savvy coders participating in a hackathon or other competition this is likely the solution of choice!

Google My Maps - Perhaps the favorite authoring tool of the novice map maker, Google provides an intuitive map creation and authoring environment via their “my map” service. All one needs is a google account and gmail, then import some data. Google supports fast import of popular spatial data formats like CSV, XLS, or KML, all of which are popular data formats used by government open data portals To use my Maps simply login to a google account and visit the myMaps service

MangoMap – This user friendly map authoring and sharing tool is quite powerful and enables the user to create beautiful maps. Creating a map is free to start, with account holders also provided a free 30 day full access to a Business account. Using a simple 3 step wizard, users are walked through the process of uploading data, customizing the look and feel, labeling, and additional map customization. Once completed, you are provided with social sharing options and code to link to or embed the map into your website

Avenza Web Map Author – Avenza Software develops powerful web authoring tools, created specifically for those who need to create beautiful maps (think NAtional Geographic). Now this may be overkill for Joe Average, however, there are likely tens of thousands of map makers out there who are already using Avenza software and creating their maps within the Adobe Illustrator environment. Using Avenza MAPublisher software users can easily generate an iframe using the Avenza Web Map Author tool, providing a map that can then be shared and embedded within a popular web authoring environment such as WordPress

Here at CloverPoint, our main focus is supporting our clients and users of Insight(TM) software, however, we also realize that there’s a need/demand for simple, fast web authoring of your maps and spatial data. Hopefully the tools mentioned above can be useful for you and when you realize that you have a need for a custom, enterprise scale land management solution, perhaps you’ll consider Insight as an option. Happy mapping…
