VENTURA, Calif. - April 9, 2015 - PRLog -- The Ventura County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, April 14 at 10:30 a.m. will consider authorizing the Ventura County Watershed Protection District, to initiate a Public Outreach Campaign providing Watershed Awareness and Education through renaming the Oxnard Industrial Drain and J Street Drain.

This pilot project will offer the public of all ages a unique opportunity to make history in the County by renaming two Ventura County water channels that pass through the City of Oxnard: theOxnardIndustrialDrainandtheJ Street Drain.

The public will be encouraged to vote for their favorite name for each channel between April 24 - May 22.

“The goals of renaming these channels are to enhance watershed awareness, connect urban communities to the natural environment; and reevaluate the historical; environmental; and cultural significance of the communities that surround these channels,” said Kathy Long, County Supervisor.

“Our hope is that the new names will enrich existing restoration and community enhancement efforts in the area and increase awareness of the watershed and its environment,” said John Zaragoza, County Supervisor.

Both channels flow to the Ormond Beach and Wetlands – a 1,500‐acre area comprised of agriculture, industry, and wetlands – that serve as a home to more than 200 migratory bird species. The habitat is recorded as having more shorebird species than any other site in Ventura County and has been recognized as the most important wetland restoration opportunity in Southern California.
