SAN DIEGO - April 9, 2015 - PRLog -- Get in on the ground floor of greatness and join the crowdfunding campaign to make a children’s adventure book a reality.

Life with Lou is an illustrated children's adventure book about a quirky and mischievous Ant looking to make it big with his friends by embarking on a journey to find treasure on the Island of Taboo. All he has to do is get there! BUT... Lou can’t swim. So with his goggles and fins in place, he embarks on the unknown journey.

Lou’s story introduces ten basic learn-to-swim skills and provides parents and educators a great opportunity to read with children and have a conversation about the importance of a positive, respectful relationship with water. The book also includes a companion step-by-step chart with each swimming skill broken down into educational, yet fun life-saving lessons for engaging kids and reinforcing skills.

Kim Shults, a local swim instructor for the past 24 years, is spearheading this inspiring project that empowers kids of all ages. Shults, who grew up in San Diego and has been swimming competitively her entire life, is a pioneer in the field of teaching swimming to individuals with autism, as well as adults with fear or anxiety in the water. A former SDUSD high school English/ ESL teacher, she left the classroom a few years ago and started Project: Face in Water, a movement to empower apprehensive individuals to be confident in and around the water. It started with a birthday quest- working with 40 individuals to help them break through aquatic anxiety (in just one hour!). Next, she developed her own Autism Speaks Swim Program (80 scholarship participants in the past year). Now, she and co-author Barbie Larimore are bringing Life with Lou to families everywhere.

Shults calls it the perfect collaboration: “I live for guiding reluctant swimmers into safe, healthy relationships with the water. As CEO at BookBundlz.com, Barbie spends her life engaging in the cause for literacy and education. When the two of us channel our energy together, amazing things happen. Characters like Lou come to life.”

Shults is always looking for ways to educate the community and share her effective teaching strategies. Meanwhile, Larimore loves reading with children and has always dreamed of writing a children’s book. To make this a reality, a Pubslush crowdfunding campaign has launched to digitally illustrate, publish and print the book with a goal of $10,000. The Reward levels include copies of Life with Lou and Autism Speaks Swim Scholarships.

“Writing Life with Lou was inspired by wanting to imagine-to-paper a really fun story that engages children in two important life skills: reading and swimming; both are fundamental in expanding life lessons and opportunities,” says Barbie Larimore, co-author.
