Writers and Illustrators of the Future Awards Celebrate 75th Anniversary for L. Ron Hubbar

31st annual Writers of the Future Awards Ceremony welcomes fans of science fiction and fantasy while also celebrating 75th anniversary of Golden Pen Award.

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - April 8, 2015 - PRLog -- This Sunday, April 12, at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre, the 75th Anniversary of the Golden Pen Award—an award conceived by Contest creator L. Ron Hubbard in 1940 while on his Alaskan Radio Experimental Expedition flying Explorers Club flag #105 to Ketchikan, AK—will be celebrated at the Writers and Illustrators of the Future Awards Ceremony.

As a feature of a radio program called the “Mail Buoy” on station KGBU, Hubbard offered advice for beginning writers and went one step further.  As Hubbard opened the radio show, he struck a chord with his listeners when he opened by stating, “It has been my experience that almost everyone, at one period or another of his life as harbored a desire to write.”  And with these words he initiated the “Golden Pen Award” writing contest to encourage listeners to write fiction.  Prizes awarded by Hubbard, included an introduction to his New York publishing contacts.

In 1983, as a continuation of a legacy of helping the aspiring artist and in recognition of the increasingly difficult path encountered between first manuscript and published work, particularly in an era in which publishers devote the lion’s share of their promotional budgets to a few household names, Hubbard “initiated a means for new and budding writers to have a chance for their creative efforts to be seen and acknowledged.” He created the Writers of the Future Contest and, over three decades later it has become the most prestigious contest of its kind in providing that much needed open door for fledgling artists.

The event is open to all provided you RSVP.  There will be no admittance without prior RSVP.  For more information on the event and to see the awards ceremony online, go to www.writersofthefuture.com,  www.twitter.com/RealWOTF or www.facebook.com/WritersandIllustratorsoftheFuture.
