Follow on Google News | KTM Roofing Advises Atlanta Area Residents to Check for Winter and Spring Attic InfestationsBy: KTM Roofing A raccoon infestation, due to the weight of the adults, is easy to figure out as they can often be heard walking across the hard surfaces on the attic. They are active breeders as well, so the number of these animals in an attic can escalate quickly. Raccoons damage the attic in two ways; first by defecating and urinating in the space and then tearing up everything in the attic including insulation, duct work, and wiring. Due to their strength, raccoons can cause extensive damage to the interior of the attic and may have caused exterior damage as well by tearing off siding or other barriers to gain access to the space in the first place. A rapidly growing family will only increase the rate and scope of the damage. Squirrels in the attic may not be as loud and strong as raccoons, but these animals can create havoc as well by doing many of the same things as raccoons while setting up and living in their burrows in an attic. In addition to the destruction in the space, the presence of squirrels will be accompanied by the scent of ammonia from their urine and odors that may cause headaches and nausea if one dies in the attic. While raccoons and squirrels may have been living in an attic for months over the winter, bats may be looking at an attic as a new location for a colony. Bat infestations are increasingly common in suburban neighborhoods due to their sprawl into the natural habitats for these animals. Like squirrels, bats can squeeze into an attic through tiny openings to take up residence in the space and for the purpose of reproducing to grow the colony. Bats are not as destructive to the structures in an attic as squirrels and raccoons are, but their waste (also known as guano) can accumulate quickly and send strong odors into the living areas of the house. The waste can also destroy the insulation on the floor of the attic. “Spring is an opportune time to inspect an attic for raccoons and squirrels and to also look for potential entry points for bats that are arriving our area,” said Tim McLoughlin, President and Founder of KTM Roofing. He added, “Fixing any damage in the attic after the professional removal of rodents and sealing any entry points immediately can get an attic back in shape and prevent future infestations.” KTM Roofing has served the Atlanta area, specializing in roof replacements and repairs as well as attic insulation and repairs, since 1984.
