By: Tanari Jewelry The word diamond comes from the Greek word adamas, which means “unconquerable and indestructible” What Is A Diamond? Diamonds are the hardest natural substance on Earth. Formed billions of years ago and deep within the Earth’s crust, every diamond is unique. Diamonds are the only gemstones that are made up of a single element; carbon. Diamonds have the highest thermal conductivities of all known materials. Carbon is the second most abundant element in the human body, and the single element in diamond composition, making energy transfer between the human body and diamonds essentially seamless. Cultural Significance of Diamonds The earliest written account of diamonds dates back to around 500 B.C. A law in Thirteenth-century France decreed that only the King could wear diamonds. In the first century AD, the Roman naturalist Pliny is quoted as having said, “Diamond is the most valuable, not only of precious stones, but of all things in this world.” The first known use of a diamond engagement ring took place in Austria in 1477. Popularized by the De Beers companies in one of the most famous marketing campaigns in history, diamond engagement rings became deeply ingrained into society in the 1930’s. Today, diamonds are used commonly to commemorate engagements and marriage, given as a sign of eternal love and fortitude. In addition to its spiritual power, diamonds have an unconquerable hardness and have been known since antiquity as a “Stone of Invincibility,” The Most Amazing (And Largest) Diamonds Ever Discovered In 2004, scientists discovered a white dwarf star, approximately 50 light years from Earth, that is essentially a diamond of ten billion trillion trillion carats. (That is not a type-o, I meant to write trillion twice.) The star was given the name Lucy after the Beatles song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” (Far Out! ✌) Also in 2004, scientists discovered a planet that they believe is composed mostly of carbon, and is one-third pure diamond! The planet, called 55 Cancri e is located approximately 40 light years away and orbits a nearby star in the Milky Way. The largest diamond ever discovered on Earth was found in South Africa in 1905 and is called the Cullinan diamond. Before being cut into 110 separate diamonds, the Cullinan diamond weighed in at an amazing 3,106 carats, or 1.33 pounds.
