Local Woman Bequeaths $200,000 to support literacy services

Shocking news was relayed to Literacy New York Buffalo-Niagara’s Executive Director Tara Vogel last week—news that many non-profits dream of but never truly expect.

It was revealed that former Literacy Volunteer Marion Swanson left $200,000 to the organization—an unusually notable amount, representing a contribution of nearly double the agency’s budget.

Representative of Marion’s estate will travel to Buffalo to present a check to the Literacy group at a press conference at 9:00 am on April 8th at the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library. Adult literacy students will be on hand to discuss the difference this funding will make in their path to a better life.

Executive Director Tara Vogel will announce plans for the agency’s largest donation ever.

About Marion

Marion Swanson, beloved wife of the late James Swanson; sister of Dorothy Scholl and the late John, William, Kathleen Grega, and Margaret Faes, passed away February 14, 2015, peacefully in her home.

Marion was actively involved in her community where she lived a simple life and lived her life to help others. She was a graduate of the Buffalo General Hospital School of Nursing and received a Master’s degree in nursing from UB. She worked as a RN at Olean General Hospital and Veterans Administration Hospital, in Buffalo, NY.  She later attended Wharton School of Management. Marion was the first Vice-President of Nursing at Buffalo General Hospital, retiring in 1995 as Director of Quality Services. She was a mentor to many and received nothing but praise in high regard by administration, staff and fellow colleagues.

Throughout her lifetime she was involved in many volunteer programs that concentrated on her love for education as well her religious belief. She was most known for her volunteer work and active involvement with St. Vincent DePaul in Williamsville and she trained to be a Literacy Volunteer at Literacy New York Buffalo-Niagara, Inc. She believed fiercely in education and that programs like the literacy program were very important to the community in which she lived.

About Marion’s Bequest

In 2006 Marion was referred to Michael Minter a financial advisor and managing partner at Mintco Financial by her dear friends; Laura Zeitler, and Joan Zee. Marion came to Mintco with many concerns about her financial standing and expressed her interest in simplifying and consolidating her accounts. Prior to meeting with Michael, she was unaware of how to protect her current assets as well as allow them to grow. Marion lived a life that was full and rewarding, yet simple at the same time. Because of Michael’s guidance, and proper estate planning, she was able to leave a legacy behind that she would be proud of and that would benefit not only her closest family members but also the charities she volunteered with and believed in throughout the years. She wanted to ensure her legacy would be passed down, so together with Michael; a plan was created that was held dear to her heart and fit her morals. Michael knew what Marion’s goals were; that simplicity was key, he learned her passions and who was important in her life. From there he provided the steps necessary to ensure her legacy would be passed down through charitable giving and to the parties that would benefit the most. Mintco Financial could not be more honored to play such an important role in Marion’s legacy; and through her legacy Marion Swanson’s memory will remain alive.
