Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement on June 7

(Palm Beach, FL – April 2, 2015) The Colony Hotel - which The Palm Beach Post has hailed as “probably the best place for cabaret on the planet” – is bursting with pride today about current Royal Room headliner Tommy Tune. The Tony Awards® Administration Committee announced this morning that the nine-time Tony Award winner and Broadway icon is this year’s recipient for the Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.

The Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre will be presented at the 2015 Tony Awards on Sunday, June 7. The American Theatre Wing’s Tony Awards are presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.

“It is our honor to present the legendary Tommy Tune with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding dedication to theatre and iconic achievements over the span of his more than 50 years in the business. He has succeeded in multiple facets of the industry – both on stage and off – and is a shining example of the magical experience that live performance brings. We are proud to celebrate his triumphs with the Lifetime Achievement honor this year,” commented Heather Hitchens, President of the American Theatre Wing, and Charlotte St. Martin, Executive Director of The Broadway League, in a statement.

Broadway’s only 9-time winner of the prestigious Tony Award, Tommy Tune is widely recognized asone of the world’s most prolific director/choreographers, who has enchanted audiences over the past 50 years with his charisma, vision and innovation. A native Texan, Mr. Tune began his career as a dancer in the Broadway shows Baker Street, A Joyful Noise and How Now Dow Jones. He would soon step out of the chorus and into a principal role in the Broadway musical Seesaw, which won him his first Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. His first Broadway directing and choreography credits were for the original production of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Tune has been honored with an unprecedented nine Tony Awards celebrating him as a performer, choreographer and director (Best Actor in a Musical for My One and Only, Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Seesaw, Best Choreography for A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine, My One and Only, Grand Hotel and The Will Rogers Follies, and Best Direction of a Musical for Nine, Grand Hotel and The Will Rogers Follies).

In addition, Tune has been awarded eight Drama Desk Awards, three Astaire Awards and the Society of Directors and Choreographers’ George Abbott Award for Lifetime Achievement. Film credits includeHello Dolly and The Boyfriend, and he made his Las Vegas debut as the star of EFX at the MGM GrandHotel. Tune is the recipient of The National Medal of Arts, the highest honor for artistic achievement given by the President of the United States, and he has been honored with his own star on the legendary Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2009, he was designated a Living Landmark by the New York Landmarks Conservancy. This is Mr. Tune’s second appearance at The Colony Hotel’s Royal Room.

For all Royal Room Cabaret performances, the doors open at 6:30 for dinner and the show starts at 8:30. To make reservations, people should call the hotel box-office at 561.659.8100.  For each guest there will be a $90 cover charge Tuesday through Thursday, and a $110 cover charge on Friday Saturday, plus a $20 minimum for food and beverage; $110 cover charge for premium seating on Tuesday through Thursday and $140 on Friday and Saturday.The Colony is located at 155 Hammon Avenue in Palm Beach, just one block south of Worth Avenue, one block west of the Atlantic Ocean.

Tommy Tune at CULTURE & COCKTAILS at The Colony on April 6

The popular series CULTURE & COCKTAILS, hosted by the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County, will conclude its 10th anniversary season next Monday, with a fascinating Conversation with Tommy Tune. He will be interviewed by Rob Russell, The Colony's Director of Entertainment and the event will be held at The Colony Hotel Pavilion in Palm Beach.

CULTURE & COCKTAIL will run from 5 to 7 p.m. on April 6, with registration and cocktails from 5 to 5:45 p.m., and the “Conversation” from 5:45 to 7 p.m., including audience Q&A. Admission  is $60 for advance RSVPs and $75 at the door, and FREE for members of the Cultural Council ($250 level and above).
