Jeremy Clarkson ‘Fracas’ and Company Catering: What Lessons to learn about Staff Motivation

Now that the dust is settling down and every one coming to terms with the demise from the BBC screens of a great show host in Jeremy Clarkson, the pundits are pouring over the rights and wrongs of the ‘Fracas’ that led to the debacle.

March 31, 2015 - PRLog -- We will surely miss the great show, Top Gear that entertained millions around the world more so in the form we knew it in. The Huffington Post (http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2015/03/11/jeremy-clarkson-top-gear-fracas-producer-catering_n_6845560.html) a few weeks ago delved in the saga shedding a little more detail according to what it thought. What it does however is mention something crucial but in passing. Catering was behind the alleged ‘fit of rage’ that has treated us to a media feat. Time and again and research after research, we’ve been made aware of the importance of motivating staff especially after a hard day’s work. Only recently, Quick Buffet’s own article on the three reasons why companies MUST consider catering (https://www.quickbuffet.co.uk/blog/three-reasons-why-your-company-should-consider-free-staff-lunches.html) as part of their staff motivation strategies pointed out this very fact.

And it’s not just employers that can benefit from happy staff. Barely a week gone after the ‘Fracas’, research for Furniture at Work reported in The Scotsman (http://www.scotsman.com/news/uk/study-finds-characteristi...) is now out in which it’s shown staff rate a work place catering highly as part of those aspects that make it the most conducive . In the research, surprisingly, a comprehensive work place catering service is rated highly among such obvious ideallist of features as floor-to-ceiling windows, personalised parking spaces and an on-site crèche it’s reported.

Free tea and coffee is just the bear minimum staff say and employers have to do a little more when it comes to keeping workers happy including a communal selection of fruit and snacks. Staff expectations are getting higher as the and as the economy rebuilds and upward pressures on retention of quality staff grows, companies will be faced with the very risk like the BBC finds itself in.

While this is in no way condoning violence at work, it serves to illustrate how simple things in life like a quality company catering service can do to help motivate and build staff morale. And after a long day filming (http://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/jeremy-clarkson-suspen...) only to come to an empty buffet table, some like Katie Hopkins (http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2015/03/11/katie-hopkins-jeremy-clarkson_n_6844938.html?utm_hp_ref=celebrity) will understand the frustration this may have brought on.

It’s all common knowledge that when staff love their job and morale is high, they will not only feel the most loyal to the company they work for but will go the extra mile to archive set targets.

Staff will be content with their job offering and spend less time looking out better offering if effort is made by companies to keep them happy. This in turn takes the strain off the HR departments on endless recruitment for the same positions. The saving is enormous besides boosting productivity. The cost of hiring new staff which accounts for lost output and logistical costs of getting the right person again is estimated at over £30,000. To BBC, this is looking to be in the millions of pounds and no wonder staff retention is important in ensuring performance and success of any business.

As the BBC will now all too well know, happy staff will make you money, and when they’re not, they will cost you. In short, one way to build your staff morale and build company loyalty which may end up saving and making you money in the long run is providing staff lunch facilities.

The Jeremy Clarkson ‘Fracas’ simply reinforces what we are all acutely aware either from personal experience or through friends;  the difference in work experience and morale staff with an arranged company catering service as part of their perks will show.

Jeremy probably didn’t feel more appreciated in his work, and cheeky as it may sound, many will not stay put simply because hard work has to be appreciated in every way possible, even simple one like a company Lunch buffet.
