Dr. Chalfie received the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, along with Roger Tsien and Osamu Shimomura, for the discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein (GFP) and its uses in research. GFP allows scientists to observe living cells in action, providing insight to protein locations, changes in cell activities, and other important factors. As a University Professor at Columbia University in the Department of Biological Sciences, Dr. Chalfie researches nerve cell development and function. He focuses on how nerve cells acquire and maintain their unique characteristics and how sensory cells respond to mechanical signals. Dr. Chalfie is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. He shared the 2005 Lewis S. Rosenstiel Award for Distinguished Work in Basic Medical Research from Brandeis University and the 2008 E.B. Wilson Medal from the American Society for Cell Biology with Dr. Tsien. In 2014, he was the president of the Society for Developmental Biology. The Dakin Memorial Lecture is an endowed lectureship that celebrates the work and achievements of Henry Drysdale Dakin and inspires students and young scientists to emulate the splendid example he set during his lifetime.
