Expedition to summit Burma’s highest peak launched by Secret Compass

March 30, 2015 - PRLog -- A team expedition to summit Burma’s highest mountain begins this October, led by pioneering adventure travel company, Secret Compass. Mount Saramati (3,826m) is also the highest peak on mainland South East Asia.

The team will explore the remote Sagaing region in north-west Burma, staying with local Naga tribes en route to their summit attempt. Applications for the remaining team spots are welcomed from anyone with good base fitness levels and a sense of adventure.

“Courtesy of Sagaing’s non-existent tourism infrastructure this adventure will feel truly remote. We’re unlikely to encounter any other tour groups” said Tom McShane of Secret Compass, who reconnoitered this wild region in December 2014.

“Many visitors whistle-stop tour Burma’s classic sights including Kyaiktiyo Pagoda and the temples of Bagan. Our adventurers will go further to explore the forests, valleys and villages of largely unvisited Nagaland, whose tribes were renowned for head-hunting practices until the 1960s.”

“Team members wishing to learn some phrases in advance face a challenge with many local Tibeto-Burman languages spoken across the region. On the ground, Nagamese Creole is understood between many villages,” explained Kerry O’Neill, marketing director with Secret Compass.

“Our expedition will help the region’s fledging tourism economy, with monies spent by the team supporting local guides and the small businesses we come across en route.”
