Surviving the Storm: Rebuilding with Purpose

Sunset Green Home in Southampton, rebuilds seeking LEED Platinum Certification after devastation from Hurricane Sandy

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. - March 26, 2015 - PRLog -- Integrity Windows and Doors is known as the “builder’s choice” for their beautiful and durable products that stand-up to nature’s elements and last for years. Now, Kim Erle has selected Integrity® Wood-Ultrex double hung, awning and casement windows from Marvin and coordinated Integrity® French doors - for the Sunset Green Home project in Southampton, NY.

The Sunset Green Home project began on October 29, 2012, when Hurricane Sandy battered the east coast with incredible wind speeds and a tremendous storm surge. What was left of Kim Erle’s 1940s cottage was a “Substantially Damaged” structure that would have to be rebuilt. After repairing damage from Hurricane Irene only one year earlier, Erle and her husband decided to embark on a journey to build the most resilient home possible in order to reduce the chance of severe damage in what would inevitably be the next big storm.

While designing the home, Erle learned that the town of Southampton had passed a property tax exemption for LEED certified homes. Since she was already in the process of designing a resilient, sustainable home that would incorporate green construction materials and environmentally friendly strategies, she decided to seek Platinum LEED certification. Erle would be the first custom home building project in the town of Southampton to take advantage of the new tax incentives.

Erle has always been environmentally conscious. But, what once was an overall respect for sustainable living became a standard she would live by after the Superstorm Sandy. “Sandy made me realize my individual responsibility,” says Erle. “Building sustainable homes is not only the responsible way to build, it’s the smartest.”

With her home overlooking the Shinnecock Bay on the Atlantic coast, Erle chose Integrity IMPACT windows and doors because the products are specially designed to withstand harsh coastal elements. Integrity’s material, Ultrex, is a pultruded fiberglass that resists warping, chipping, bending and breaking. It is strong as steel, three-times stronger than vinyl/wood composites and eight-times stronger than vinyl. Integrity’s superior finish means dependable composites in almost every measurable category.

Integrity’s IMPACT Wood-Ultrex line offered Erle the classic look of wood on the interior and the strength of Ultrex on the exterior; IMPACT products meet coastal storm requirements with laminated glass – without unsightly reinforcements.

But Erle’s decision to use Integrity on her Sunset Green Home project goes far beyond Integrity’s strength and durability. Integrity’s six exterior colors, choice of bare wood or a prefinished interior, five hardware finishes, exterior trim choices and numerous grille and glass options make Integrity the perfect choice for Kim Erle and her coastal home of the future.

“I hope people view the Sunset Green Home project as an educational story” says Erle. “Coastal windows make a huge difference and building an environmentally conscious home is not as prohibitive as people may assume. Although some costs may be higher in the short term, these investments will more than pay for themselves in terms of operating and maintenance costs, and durability.”

Construction on the 3,600-square-foot Sunset Green Home is scheduled for completion this summer, 2015.
