AMARILLO, Texas - March 25, 2015 - PRLog -- Three out of four Americans live paycheck to paycheck, with little to no savings in case of emergency, according to a 2013 Bankrate.com survey. That's a lifestyle Junior Achievement of the High Plains is working to change. At their 4th Annual Junior Achievement Breakfast on April 9 at the Amarillo Country Club, JA officials will talk about the impact its financial literacy programs have in Amarillo and Canyon.

Junior Achievement of the High Plains was brought to Amarillo by a group of local bankers who recognized a need for more financial education for students. Its purpose is to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise and understand business and economics to improve the quality of their lives. The organization started with 497 students in AISD and currently serves 3,347 students in both AISD and CISD schools.

“In today's economic conditions, it is imperative that our students improve their financial literacy. A study by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority reveals that Texas ranks among the bottom 15 states in financial literacy. The Junior Achievement program is designed to address this issue head-on. AISD is fortunate indeed to have the support of the private sector to help us address this need,” said Rod Schroder, AISD Superintendent.

Students learn financial topics such as budgeting, saving, the importance of establishing credit and how to minimize debt. Business volunteers from within the community lead the classes.

The community breakfast will serve as a fundraiser for Junior Achievement, which is the fastest growing non-profit economic education organization in the world. The breakfast will also introduce prospective volunteers to the program. To become involved or to attend the breakfast, contact Junior Achievement of the High Plains at 806-355-0045.
