Now, on the heels of telling his true story, he’s donating a portion of his royalties to others in need.
By: Outskirts Press, Inc. The non-fiction, released in the fall of 2014, is published by Outskirts Press. Cerebral palsy is a developmental disease impacting motor coordination. The condition affects three out of 1,000 children. Generally medical intervention such as physical or speech therapy, and ambulatory aides like wheelchairs or braces, are used to help those with CP achieve self-sufficiency. The Variety Club Camp & Developmental Center is an 80-acre facility that serves children with physical and developmental disabilities, helping them build independence and self-confidence through educational, recreational and social enrichment activities and year-round programming. Facilities include 20 heated and air-conditioned cabins, a dining hall, a health center, outdoor pool, sports fields, tennis courts, field house, nature center and greenhouse, computer room, arts and crafts center and an amphitheater, all wheelchair accessible. Born in the early 1950s with a type of spastic cerebral palsy that affected his gait and balance but left his speech intact, John Brown was determined to prove he wasn’t “just another special needs child.” He defied the odds, and his own doctors’ predictions for him, that he would never walk. After an early childhood full of muscle lengthening surgeries and body braces, he insisted on a mainstream education in the Philadelphia Catholic, then public, school systems, and went on to play Catholic grade school football and develop a keen interest in high school wrestling and football. Brown went on to earn a degree in broadcast journalism and embarked on a 44-year career as an award-winning Philadelphia radio disc jockey, traffic reporter and meteorologist. He retired in October 2013. Brown’s story is a story of the unbreakable American spirit; an illustration of how tears, determination and true grit can get anyone to the top if they give it their all. “A wonderful story full of inspiration and encouragement …” “John’s remarkable journey is a book you won’t be able to put down …” “Why Not? is a book that gives me a sense of hope. I will keep trying to achieve my goal of finding consistent meaningful work and someone to love.” – Reader reviews. Why Not?
