March 24, 2015 - PRLog -- In whatever fictional universe the Mission: Impossible movies are set in, there seems to be an endless supply of stakes to be raised for Ethan Hunt and team to overcome. They’ve saved the world from near destruction 4 times and are back for another go-around. The trailer for Mission Impossible Rouge Nation, is the latest installment in the popular action franchise, flashes the goods and teases us at what’s to come…But it also, seems to take a cue from another popular action franchise…

Maybe it’s cause I secretly want everything to be like Fast and Furious, but I can’t help but see a lot of similarities in how Mission Impossible Rogue Nation is being presented to us, the consumers, and I can’t really fault them.

The Fast and Furious franchise has seemed to tap into the movie going audience and build a sustainable film franchise based on the notion that Dominc Torreto and Brian O’Conner are the two best drivers on the planet, who live life in the grey area between good and bad, and as a result find themselves in precarious situations once every two years. After 3 Fast 3 Furious (aka Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift) the producers of the film series had the genius idea to not repeat the same plot ever movie, instead choosing to attempt to evolve the characters, if not emotional, evolve them occupationally and locationally….Slowly transitioning the franchise from pure street racing, to what appears to be straight international espionage in the up-coming film. But never losing sight of the point: we have the best drivers on the planet, let’s put them to work.

Ethan Hunt, in the Mission Impossible Rogue Nation universe. Is for all intents and purposes, the best detective on the planet. There isn’t a mission to big for him to handle….and that’s the premise this entire franchise is built under…Which the producers of the film series have wisely decided to test the merits of Ethan Hunt and see exactly how much he can handle.

What’s Awesome About The Trailer

1) “One Last Mission”:
This another very Fast and Furious-y thing to do. “One Last Ride” is such a staple in every Fast movie (i.e. in every movie Vin utters the words “One Last Ride” even though they are on their seventh film) that it’s both expected and basically an in-joke at this point. It’s a clear sign that the producers of Mission Impossible Rogue Nation aren’t taking the film too seriously, if they can have fun with it, so can we the viewers.

2) Tom Cruise on a motorcycle: Name me one movie where Tom Cruise isn’t in a motorcycle? He finds a way to work one into futuristic sci-fi thriller Oblivion, and I’m pretty sure there was one in the Last Samurai as well (okay, I might be making that last one up). If Tom Cruise isn’t on a motorcycle in a movie, Tom Cruise ain’t living. At least they are using his obsession with motorcycles for good…The tease of an epic motorcycle chase in Mission Impossible Rogue Nation seems all but evident at this point.

3) Hyper-specific plot devices: Wonderfully contrived plot devices are some of the most fun elements of the Mission: Impossible film series. I’m glad the producers of the film haven’t shied away from that element in this one either….Part of the fun is seeing what convultedness they can come up with that is held together by razor thin strands of logic.

4) Alec Baldwin as Dr. Exposition: Every movie like this needs one. The Fast and Furious movies enlist the help of Kurt Russell in the up coming installment to play this same role, and I gotta say, Mission: Impossible hit a home run with Baldwin. Baldwin can be dynamite in small doses, but over-bearing in large ones…I’m assuming he’ll be the bad guy right?

5) More masks: One of the things Fast and Furious does well is they don’t go away from what works and what people are expecting. Part of the fun of franchise films is that there are in-jokes, call backs and staple bits that are part of the fabric of the universe, and the realistic masks are absolutely a can’t miss opportunity for ever M:I film. I’m still waiting for the scene where it’s two people fighting and just continually ripping masks off each other’s faces.

6) MOAR STUNTS!!: Last but not least, the set pieces in this movie look absolutely epic. In M:I-4 Cruise got stuck on the tallest building in the world and now he’s trying to catch a plane while it’s mid-flight (which seems impossible that he could even talk on the phone, let alone get on the plane, but I am not a physicist). Bigger is better with action movies, but bigger also needs to be clever and more creative as well…it’s what has carried the Fast and Furious movies and looks to be a recurring pattern with this Mission: Impossible franchise.

I have really liked this franchise and think they have largely gotten better as it’s gone on, which is weird as most franchises get worse normally. They certainly seem to be just hitting their stride with Mission Impossible Rogue Nation and I’m excited to see how the final product turns out. The addition of Simon Pegg has just done wonders for the series, I’m unsure how sustainable it would have been without is humor stylings to combat Tom Cruise (even if 60% of his role is just looking stupid after Cruise recommends something that he shouldn’t). They seem to have learned their lesson after MI2, that while this is an Ethan Hunt movie, it’s still also a team gig as well.
