Follow on Google News | ASD Inc. announces recipients of the 2015 Students in Mining TerraSpec Instrument ProgramAnnual awards recognize a diverse selection of research utilizing near-infrared (NIR) reflectance spectroscopy
By: ASD Inc. Five candidates have been granted the use of a TerraSpec® 4 mineral analyzer and The Spectral Geologist (TSG®) Pro mineral analysis software. The TerraSpec 4 uses flexible, near-infrared spectroscopy to measure a wide variety of samples, offering better visibility for students conducting mineral analysis as part of their mining, energy or geothermal research. For the first time in the program’s history, one student has been granted temporary use of the TerraSpec Halo mineral identifier. This handheld, full-range NIR spectrometer will help the student determine mineralogy through its all-in-one capture capabilities and immediate multi-mineral results. “The Students in Mining program was developed to enhance research in the mining and energy industries,” Student winners were selected based on multiple criteria including the creative application of the TerraSpec line in their research proposals. The recipient of the TerraSpec Halo and their research topic is: Jing Chen, Ph.D. Candidate, University of Tasmania, Australia Proposal Title: ‘Study of the Zijinshan high sulfidation epithermal Cu-Au deposit, part of the Zijinshan Cu-Au district in SW Fujian Province, SE China Recipients of the TerraSpec 4 and their mining and energy related research topics include: Marcus Adam, M.Sc. Candidate, University of Western Ontario, Canada Proposal Title: ‘A Geochemical Investigation into the Processes of Gold Mineralisation at the FAT Deposit, Courageous Lake, NWT and Implications for Exploration’ William Andrews, Ph.D. Candidate, RMIT University, Australia Proposal Title: ‘Quantifying Uranium – A spectral approach to grade determination and mineral speciation for geometallurgical and camp or deposit scale exploration applications’ Heta Lampinen, Ph.D. Candidate, University of Western Australia, Australia Proposal Title: ‘Defining Mineral Systems footprints in the Edmund Basin of Capricorn Orogen’ Paige E. Granneman, M.Sc. Candidate, Western Washington University, USA Proposal Title: ‘Hydrothermal Alteration and Secondary Mineralization Characterization of Geothermal Gradient Well Core, Akutan Island, AK’ Jessica Stromberg Ph.D. Candidate, University of Western Ontario, Canada Proposal Title: ‘Constraining Detection Limits of Organic Compounds in Geological Samples and their Association with Gold Mineralization at the Dome Mine in Timmins, Ontario’ To complement their field work, recipients are eligible to receive up to USD 500 to cover publication charges and/or travel assistance for presentation of their research completed as part of the Students in Mining program.
