About the Book

Gather at the Table
is the chronicle of a journey undertaken by Sharon Morgan, a black woman from Chicago and a descendant of slaves on both sides of her family, and Tom DeWolf, a white man from rural Oregon who descends from the largest slave-trading dynasty in American history. Over a three-year period, the pair travelled thousands of miles, visiting ancestral towns, courthouses, cemeteries, plantations, and historic sites. DeWolf and Morgan speak candidly about the unhealed wounds of slavery that are at the root of modern day racism and continue to divide America. Their book and related presentations offer practical advice on how individuals and communities can engage in a healing process that leads to racial reconciliation.

Gather at the Table was endorsed by Nobel Peace Prize winner, Leymah Gbowee, and won the Phillis Wheatley Book Award (http://aalbc.com/books/wheatley-award-winners-2013.html) for Best Nonfiction in 2013. A review in YES! magazine (http://www.yesmagazine.org/issues/the-human-cost-of-stuff...) said: “By authentically confronting themselves, each other, and the past that has shaped both black and white Americans, Morgan and DeWolf have created a powerful story of hope, awakening, and reconciliation.” Since publication of the book in 2012, the authors have spoken at schools, churches, community organizations, and companies all over America where SRO audiences frequently erupt in standing ovations. The message they deliver is particularly relevant in times when people are searching for solutions in response to recent events in Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Missouri and New York. Arkansas has long history of racial intolerance that needs to be addressed so we can all move forward to a better America.
