Six Joan Crawfords is the tale of a half dozen has-been divas who star in a faltering stage play, Miss Tangerine’s Diary, as it tours from Toledo to Topeka to Tupelo. Enormous egos and lack of introspection abound, resulting in comedic turns from one scene to the next. The comedy unfolds backstage, over the course of a trio of acts in three separate cities.

A character study, Six Joan Crawfords features six women who view themselves as larger than life despite life largely leaving them behind. Six Joan Crawfords is an original play, premiering with this production. It is also the inaugural production to be staged at the West End Theatre and Arts Center in Lakewood at the 40 West Arts District.

Characters:

(Flexibility exists as to the ages of the characters.)

Leeza Spain: Enjoyed success on Broadway in what seems like another lifetime. Before this particular theatrical venture, she embarked on a singing career that peaked when she did the jingle for Grand Gigantic brand kosher wieners. With seven husbands under her belt, she has her sights set on the director of the production, Theodore Nixon.

Veronica Wonder: Claimed fame initially by co-hosting the once popular Magic Sprinkles game show on a major television network. More recently, she gained traction as the spot-removing, cubic zirconia wearing infomercial queen on late night telly. She idolizes Zsa Zsa Gabor and was arrested once while stalking a Hilton heir.

Claireen Fyck: Before becoming a star of the silver screen for a magnificent three year run, she attended but did not graduate from the Claire Boothe Luce School of Secretarial Sciences. Armed with this certificate, she fancies herself a brilliant wonk. When not acting, she rents motor scooters to senior citizens in Boca Raton.

Taber Taylor: Began her career in a folk group that ended up being busted as drug mules when returning from a concert in Mazatlán. After a short prison stint, she played Miss Daffodil in the public television series Happy Happy Clap Clap. She summarily left the kiddie program in the aftermath of a sex scandal involving a priest, a politician and long weekend at a Travelway Lodge in Omaha.

Constance Wolfe: Still remembered as the Florida grapefruit goddess, she initially gained fame as a backup singer on the pleasant Herbert Wannamaker Variety Hour. Fond of torch songs, she was regularly confused with a drag performer. Perhaps because of this confusion, she became a vitriolic anti-gay crusader and a favorite of the fundamentalist crowd.

Cloria Ronson: Rising star on the beloved sitcom Mermaid Ahoy! until she was fished out of the fountain fronting the Beverly Hills Grand Hotel wearing only a top-hot she shoplifted from a formalwear shop on Rodeo Drive. The playwright who created Miss Tangerine’s Diary, her closest friend, insisted on her casting.

Theodore Nixon: Vaguely related to the former U.S. President of the same name, and the director of Miss Tangerine’s Diary, (and something of a theatrical cliché) he logs more time in rehab centers than on the boards. His last production showed some promise but for the theater catching fire during the second act on opening night.

Freddy Jackson: Capable, quiet and frustrated, the stage manager of Miss Tangerine’s Diary has hopes of performing on stage but feels stuck in the rut created by his patron, Theodore Nixon.

Rock Plymouth: Fussy, prissy and incompetent, he is the playwright behind Miss Tangerine’s Diary. He travels with the cast after winning a drinking game with director Theodore Nixon, an event conducted in a dank tavern of dubious reputation in Iowa City.

Helgore Fine: Long time theater critic with a penchant for referencing Helgore Fine (frequently) in the third person. Brags of availing herself of the latest technologies in spreading her critiques, like taking full advantage of the “Internet machine.” Never met a dangling preposition she was not terribly fond of.
