Local Eagle Scout fundraises to give children Sweet Dreamzzz

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - March 20, 2015 - PRLog -- Local student and Eagle Scout, Andrew Campbell, decided he wanted to make a difference in the lives of children in need by dedicating his Eagle Scout project to the mission of Sweet Dreamzzz, Inc. Because of his efforts, the 273 K-5 students at Gardner Elementary School in Detroit will receive the Sweet Dreamzzz™ R.E.M. (Rest. Educate. Motivate.) Sleep Program and each child will be given a sleep kit.

Campbell expressed his gratitude for the chance to help others and to work with Sweet Dreamzzz.

"To put it simply, I am grateful. Sweet Dreamzzz has given me an amazing opportunity to help others and has provided only the best support along the way. It has been a pleasure working with the organization,” said Campbell. “I have witnessed the Sweet Dreamzzz program in action and am happy another school on their waiting list can be given the great opportunity of their program.”

Campbell set a goal to raise $2,250 for the sleep education materials and bedtime supplies necessary to serve 150 low-income elementary-age children in the Detroit area. He surpassed his goal by raising $3,418, enough to serve all of the K-5 students at Gardner.

He raised the funds by holding three different fundraisers. The first was a “Free Dress Day” at his high school (Catholic Central). Campbell raised $1,165 by arranging a day for students to dress down, as opposed to wearing their school uniforms, for $2 each.  He raised $700 from a can and bottle drive and then reached out to his family, friends and Sweet Dreamzzz supporters with an online fundraiser, raising over $1,000.

Sweet Dreamzzz, Inc. educates at-risk children and their families on the importance of sleep and gives them bedtime essentials so they can feel rested and ready to learn.  TheirR.E.M. (Rest. Educate. Motivate.) Sleep Program is a unique program that deals with nighttime - a period in a child’s life that is rarely addressed. The program is twofold, bringing both warmth and comfort to the children as well as vital information they need to ensure a good night’s rest. The R.E.M. Sleep Program starts with a 30 minute presentation, educating the children on the importance of sleep and good sleep hygiene habits. After the presentation, every child receives a sleep kit that includes: a brand new sleeping bag, reading book by sleep professional, Dr. James B. Maas, Sweet Dreamzzz t-shirt, toothbrush and toothpaste.

The program at Gardner will take place on Wednesday, March 25, with the first presentation at 9:30 a.m.

Since its inception in 1998, Sweet Dreamzzz has been able to serve over 44,000 children with sleep education.
