YORK, U.K. - March 20, 2015 - PRLog -- BugBrush, a new-style, brightly coloured toothbrush that babies from six months old can use by themselves has been launched priced £12.99. The caterpillar-shaped toothbrush has 10 times more plaque removing bristles than standard baby toothbrushes.

With more than 10,000 individual nylon bristles, it’s double sided symmetrical design ensures both top and bottom teeth are cleaned simultaneously. Its unique, patented curved design incorporates five adjoining segments which allow a degree of movement, making BugBrush a fun and ergonomic brushing experience for your baby.

Designed by frustrated mum Rowena Johnson when her daughter Saskia, then a year old, stubbornly refused to allow the brush end of her child's toothbrush into her mouth, preferring instead to gnaw the rubber end, which she almost choked on. She couldn’t find an alternative design and decided to create her own and called it the BugBrush.

A national dental health survey has recently highlighted the need for better dental health care. Nearly half of eight-year-olds and a third of five-year-olds have signs of decay in their milk teeth, according to the 2013 Children's Dental Health Survey for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

A survey last September by Public Health England also revealed that one in 10 three-year-olds has tooth decay. Toddlers had an average of three teeth that were decayed, missing or filled.

BugBrush has the backing of Professor Monty Duggal, Head of Paediatric Dentistry at Leeds Dental Institute, a leading expert in tooth decay in children under five years. He says: “Tooth decay remains the most common preventable disease throughout the world. What many parents don’t realise, is that the damage caused to babies teeth happens within the first year of the tooth erupting. Not taking care of babies’ teeth and gums in this critical timeframe will no doubt lead to decay.”

“Having a product which can be given to a baby that they can use independently throughout the day, in addition to parental cleaning with toothpaste morning and night, will be very beneficial. This is the good thing about the BugBrush - that the child can use it themselves. I think the design is great as it uses real nylon toothbrush filaments, which are plaque removers, not the silicone bristles - which are not as effective.”

“By giving the child the BugBrush toothbrush to use after each feed or meal will ensure the gums and emerging teeth are kept free of food debris and plaque, increase salivary flow, which will in turn reduce the chance of tooth decay.”
