Immigration reform has stagnated for a decade, and the immigration system is broken. The reason why is masked by and at times intentionally hidden behind hundreds of thousands of pages of debate and other documents produced by policy makers and legislators.

This new book is an unprecedented inquiry into the big Why? behind the broken immigration system. Among other documents, such as eye witness accounts and court filings, the book examines the voluminous pages of debate (well over 50,000 for starters) produced by policy makers and legislators on the immigration question. The result is a critical compilation of the most flagrant human rights violations and other egregious errors that have occurred in the last 100 years under the guise of attempts at reform or reasoned debate. Events such as 9/11, the ongoing failure to secure the border, and the unreasonably costly odysseys that many immigration cases have to take through the courts (to give just a few examples) happened in a larger context and for a reason that it is in the interest of many powers-that-be to phrase in dissociated terms. The book chronicles these incidents using little known or marginalized documents. The inquiry looks behind the facade, and it does so from the perspective of a healthy civic society.

This book is interactive; it proceeds on a question and answer basis. The current state of immigration is quite unique: the same problems repeat themselves over and over again, as they have been repeating themselves over a considerable period of time, while the-powers-that-be act in many instances as if the problem were in fact brand new. This indicates that public debate and mainstream media ask the wrong questions. Analysis becomes relatively easy when problems are isolated and properly questioned. This book goes behind the scenes. It looks at little known or marginalized documents that provide the reasons why policy makers hide behind rhetoric, whether it is rhetoric of fear or of humanitarian bravado. The logic to find the Why? Is out there and accessible to anyone.

This book meets the unmet need of a lack of accurate information in the debate on immigration. According to leading opinion polls, the vast majority of the American public disapproves of how Congress does its job. Even worse, the vast majority believes that members of Congress are willing to sell their vote, and that members are re-elected only because election rules are rigged to benefit incumbents. Voters, in other words, are out of touch with the reality that they elect. Exposing the totality of the problem by providing accurate data and asking the right questions is a conscience raising tool. It enables proper assignment of cause and therefore confrontation of the problem. This is what the low approval rating asks for. The book is the result of over several years of archival, in-person, grassroots journalism, and academic research in the current practice, history, policy, and legislation of immigration.
