End of Life Doulas: Perfect Palliative Companions

The concept of the doula by definition is a palliative companion. In the pre-hospice world, we need doulas too. High level holistic support for quality of life.

AUSTIN, Texas - March 17, 2015 - PRLog -- There has been little press about the movement of the end of life doula but it is there. The New York Times did a feature in 2006 and another recently in which I was interviewed. The Guardian did one last year and the Austin American Statesman reported on us in 2010. It is a "'new phenomenon" in a way and yet before hospitals and mortuaries took over our dying, our families were our doulas.

But here we are now, in 2015, with a whole movement of people wanting to serve (the doulas) people wanting more service. Its catching on like wildlfire. Doula trainings are popping up all over. When I began my Certificate Program in 2010 there were no other doula training programs in the US. Now, you can get a 6-1 organizing and doula course program! Times are changing for sure.

I want to suggest that doulas need not be only for birth and death. I want us to expand our vision into the time period that I am very passionate about and that is the time period from "when-treatments-begin-to-stop-working" until hospice service. Outside of actual vigil during the hours leading to death, this is the other time period that needs us deparately.

No interview this week folks. Its just me sharing my thoughts about doulas, palliative care and how we can use doulas upstream from the hospice time period. Families need so much support there. I have ideas to share and programs to build with interested parties. Write me and lets create the most affordable and effective program yet that will actually make a huge difference in the lives of people prior to hospice, as most people do not die with hospice.

I will be having my Course (from which I train my doulas) available for download soon for people who want the information for themselves. I've been told from students that it would have helped them tremendously had they had it when their loved ones were dying. Go to www.accompanyingthedying.com and sign up so I can let you know when it is available. In the meantime you will receive my Special Report: 5 Things You Need to Know Before You Go Into Private Practice as an EOL Doula.
