MARICOPA, Ariz. - March 19, 2015 - PRLog -- WASHINGTON – Councilmember Manfredi joined more than 2,000 city officials and delegates who have convened in Washington March 7-11 for the 50th annual National League of Cities (NLC) Congressional City Conference.

Although the conference itself started on March 7th, Councilmember Manfredi along with representatives from Maricopa arrived early in order to advocate for city priorities with Congress and the Administration. They met individually with Senator Jeff Flake, Congresswomen Ann Kirkpatrick, Congressman Paul Gosar, Congressman Ruben Gallego, and the staff for Congressman Raul Grijalva.

Councilmembers Manfredi, Wade, Smith along with Mayor Price and city staff had the opportunity to meet with representatives from the Federal Highway Administration, The House Natural Resources Sub Committee, The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Army Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) regarding the I11 highway designation, 347 Overpass and The Santa Cruz River Watershed Project.

Councilmember Manfredi Stated: “I believe the benefit of this trip cannot be measured in dollars, but in the long term impact on Maricopa’s future. The 347 Overpass needs a Tiger Grant from the Federal Government to get dirt moving. The Santa Cruz River Watershed Project will help spur development in Maricopa and we need to stay on top of its progression. The potential future impact of the I11 interstate coming though Maricopa’s planning area would be enormous for the city, so we must also continue to advocate for this project”.

On Monday March 9th President Barack Obama addressed delegates (http://www.nlc.org/media-center/news-search/president-oba...) to thank local leaders for many partnerships and connections that unite all levels of government working to make our communities, and our country, stronger. During his address, President Obama introduced a new initiative, TechHire (http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2015/03/09/fac...), to educate and empower Americans with the skills they need to compete in a 21st century economy. "Success is going to rest on folks like you -- on mayors, councilmembers, local leaders -- because you've got the power to bring your communities together and seize this incredible economic development opportunity that could change the way we think about training and hiring the workers of tomorrow," President Obama added.

"President Obama's visit comes at a time when federal leaders are ‘going local' by partnering with cities on initiatives that build stronger communities and improve the lives of our residents," said NLC President Ralph Becker, mayor, Salt Like City, Utah.

Several cabinet officials will addressed the conference, including several former local leaders:

U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz
U.S. EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy
U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell
U.S. Labor Secretary Thomas E. Perez
U.S. Housing & Urban Secretary Julián Castro

The National League of Cities (NLC) is dedicated to helping city leaders build better communities. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.
