By: The Moby Grape Since the reunion the fundraising has continued in their effort to reach their goal of twenty thousand dollars. Currently the fund has accumulated a total of ten thousand and one dollars ($10,001.00) Tichenor is asking the public to help them achieve their goal of twenty thousand dollars however, he is not asking the community to do it alone. Tichenor will match community donations up to five thousand dollars until the twenty thousand dollar goal is met. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts and will be presented on May 8th, 2015 at the Las Vegas Academy’s Jazz Festival. Proceeds will be used to purchase and make much needed repairs to musical instruments for the schools programs. Donations can be made via the Moby Grape website (www.themobygrape.com) or in person by contacting Steve Tichenor, owner of the Moby Grape. Interview Opportunities: About the Moby Grape: Owned and operated by Ralph Bullinger (now deceased), Lloyd (Grape) Charles, John Harrity, and Steve Tichenor, the Moby Grape is part of the bedrock of rockarcheology in Las Vegas. Contrary to what you might think the club was not named after the psychedelic band with the same name, nothing more than a happy accident, Tichenor’s partner’s nickname was “Grape”. Tichenor said, “When we were voting on names 'Grape' had to be in it -- as you see it was!” Once they decided on the name they actually had no idea there was a band with the same name. As it turned out the band had only registered the rights to the name in California which allowed them to trademark the name for uses elsewhere and the rest is rock n roll history. The Moby Grape remained operational from July 1972 until July 1990, and is truly a Las Vegas success story. About the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts: The Las Vegas Academy of the Arts is a magnet high school located in Downtown Las Vegas, Nevada. Students are accepted through an audition process and claim a "major" pertaining to performing arts, visual arts, or foreign languages. End
